XCOM 2's loading screens are even better with Long War 2 since they flicker between the default advent propaganda and more sinister variants.
Also Freddie Prinze Jr. is my favorite video game character.

After some years The Sims 3 got an update that introduced loading screens which show screenshots of DLC content scenes. It displays the name of an object and you're supposed to find and click on it. After the world finished loading, you get rewarded with lifetime points (or whatever they are called) which allow you to buy perks.
While loading still takes way too long in The Sims 3, it's a great way to keep the player busy and interested.
The best loading screen of all:

I think those tunnel/QTE ones are the most clever but I can see a problem if its a console game that gets ported to PC as you need to accommodate for slow computers.
The XCOM 2 loading screens have bad connotations for me because I only see them when savescumming after aliens wipe half of my team in one turn

Simple really, it just takes longer to pry open that shutter.
If it involves a long corridor, just do that thing that most seamless open world games do.
Blood Dragon's loading screen is for sure one of the best for me. "Grenades explode." "C400 is like C4, but with two zeroes."

What the fuck. I've played XCOM 2 recently (yesterday) and that definitely didn't happen to my loading screens. It stayed as the propaganda version.
Edit: I can't read. I didn't realize those were from Long War 2 even though everyone said that.
The Metroid Prime games also had seamless loading with every door not unlocking before the next room was loaded and elevators acting as longer load screens for new areas of the world.
There were some awkward times sometimes with the doors requiring some extra seconds to load (maybe because the next room was huge) and you were like "c'mon i don't have all day", but that didn't happen very often, most of the time the doors usually loaded in the blink of an eye.
dumb loading screen tips are the worst, how hard is it to put some proper knowledge in there anyway? i never knew far cry blood dragon satirized that too, that's great
I was always fond of oblivion's

He missed out on cutscene loading screens like in Max Payne 3
I still find it impressive that some games have minimized their loading screens. Arkham Knight is a seriously impressive looking game, and has only one loading screen when you boot up. That's it. Until you close the game, you don't see any more.
"Back in the days of the genesis, loading screens didn't pop up too much because cartridges were like ssds of the past, reading information super FAST wacky woo WOO WOO WOO---" god, shut up
so weird how youtubers go from gibbering like a cartoon and then immediately launch into a joke about "sliding down princess peach's slide." who laughs at this shit?
just watched some more of his vids. yikes, this has got to be the most annoying youtube persona alive. i'm gonna dive into traffic goodbye

One of my favorite "loading" games isn't a loading game at all; for all its flaws, EA's Battlefront had a really cool thing where you could play as Vader fighting wave after wave of Rebels on Hoth while the game was installing.
Resident Evil's loading screens were terrifying back in the day. The jumpscare in RE2 literally made me piss my pants as a kid.

Those are great until you go to replay the game.

It's the best and the longest. You get a lot more good out of that loading screen compared to all others.
Sonic 06 truly was ahead of its time. :v:
I feel like he forgot to mention cutscene loading screens. In games like Call of Duty 4, allowing you to watch cutscenes while waiting, but letting you skip them once it's done loading if you don't wanna watch.
fuck dude this is such a good topic and he did it really well
my favorite things in games are things like these, and dynamic main menu screens that change up depending on where you're at in the story
rockband3, hl2, etc. did this and its so refreshing
I remember the Metroid Prime games would just load up rooms in real time. The only real loading screens were the elevators from region to region. If you noclipped out somehow, you'd see the game only loaded like two rooms ahead and behind. This meant that if you went away from a room and returned, the enemies would have respawned. Great shit, shame I don't see it more often.

this was the coolest of them all imo

this one has always stuck with me
Aw yeah he included RE's doors!
I loved those! They're so simple, and yet they give so much atmosphere to the game. And the jump scare is actually pretty good.
:snip:
Spec Ops: The Line was already brought up, but still, I loved how subversive the loading screens were

I remember playing HL2 with 512MB RAM and a single core Celeron and going off to make a sandwich or grab a snack every time there was a loading screen :v:
