This guy and his team have created a high powered microscope with electronics and optical pieces embedded within paper pages, which pop out, fold and lock together.
They cost 50 cents to produce, are highly durable, lightweight, and are demonstrated throughout this talk in real time.
They appear to have the ability to project the image onto surfaces as well.
It's main purpose is to allow for quick field diagnosis in areas of the world where it is impractical to lug around a full microscope, but it adheres to current scientific standards for slide mounts allowing them to be used anywhere in the world with slides made for any microscope.
That's fucking incredible and I want one.
Imagine how well this would help school students, considering my old class had 30 people hovered around 2 full-size microscopes.
I knew I couldn't be the only person who pronounced "specific" like that.
spefthifthically
I've got to hand it to them, that is pretty damn impressive.
Waiting for the printout particle colliders now.
If I could ever get my hands on a couple of those, that would be so awesome.
I loved looking at tissue slides and live microorganisms swimming around during my first year of university
Watch it get no attention at all because you can't make a profit off it

No, the cost production is on the same plane as the cost to produce a toy. A toy can cost 50 cents to make and sell 10 dollars on the shelf.
You cam sell this from 10 to 15 dollars on toy store shelfs with part of the profit going to charity and be in the black just fine.

I'm sure the red cross will be all over these faster than a russian man on a car bonnet.

I would buy them and hand them out at parties, weddings as gifts for people, all kinds of things.
Hell, if you wanted to do it as a fundraiser, sell them on ThinkGeek for $5 a pop so you can donate four to someone that needs them. Congrats, you spent five bucks and improved the equipment capacity of four different doctors in a third world country!
We could sell this as a toy for children ages 8 and up.
I thought they meant a 50 cent (rapper) microscope that could fold up.
This is just as good.
They even work as projection microscopes, which is cool as shit. I want so many of them.
how
