I have a friend who was here when this happened. [THUMB]https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/t1.0-9/10457589_1432767187002431_3226120109910882363_n.jpg[/THUMB][THUMB]https://scontent-b-lhr.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t1.0-9/10492505_1432767203669096_4954175302721180870_n.jpg[/THUMB] "Holy shit in Tokyo. He is self kill now." He did indeed die, if anyone was with any doubt.
Any source on what has changed, if anyone sets themselves on fire it had to be serious or the guy is just dumb
Any source on what has changed, if anyone sets themselves on fire it had to be serious or the guy is just dumb
I think he was protesting Japan's re-militarisation in the face of China becoming more aggressive.
Oh boy...
I was there just a few days ago. Weird.
Related.
Imagine waking up one morning and thinking "This is the day I set myself on fire" Man, that's some heavy shit.
Related.
Even more related given the reason for his protest.
Imagine waking up one morning and thinking "This is the day I set myself on fire" Man, that's some heavy shit.
Anyone who willingly sets themselves on fire and just burns peacefully for a cause is unbelievably badass in my book. They're sacrificing themselves for something they believe in using the most gruesome and terrifying method possible.
Any source on what has changed, if anyone sets themselves on fire it had to be serious or the guy is just dumb
The current PM is basically going to "reinterpret", or just do away with all together, article 9 of the Japanese constitution to allow them to wage war even if isn't in self defense. Theres around 30,000 or 40,000 protesters outside the PM's office protesting the resolution. It's a pretty big fuckin deal right now and I'm surprised it hasn't ended up in the news more.
It was self-immolation that kicked off the Arab Spring. It's a powerful and selfless way to bring attention to something.
I never understood this form of protest. I'm gonna refer to Ricky Gervais on this.
Are their any alternative to self immolation that are as "loud"?
Are their any alternative to self immolation that are as "loud"?
suicide bombing?
It's insanely a more powerful message than simple protest. It is the ultimate appeal to emotion and shock. Gervais completely misunderstands this because it's not meant to be a threat at all
Much better than a violent protest which hurts others in my books. As gruesome as it may be.
I don't see a problem with the change.
So you want wars?
I don't see a problem with the change.
Japan is still full of racist assholes and after their history shouldn't be allowed to be militarized ever again. Even ignoring all that, do you really want another nation to go wage war? But yeah on that racism and shit do look it up; very high up officials are racist and deny war crimes in World War II. I believe their official state broadcaster said they did nothing wrong in China back then and that they were "just liberating mainland asia from US imperialism" and that most of all this was "US lies"

The younger, globalized generation is far less racist in comparison.
suicide bombing?
I think a suicide bombing, while definitely more dangerous and arguably a "stronger" a message, is a worse/quieter protest than self immolation. People willingly setting themselves on fire makes people think about an issue in a different way than suicide bombings.

Not that I'm sterotyping all of Japan, but younger racists do exist there. And the old people are in office, not the young ones.
Did you some words?
Oops fixed [editline]1st July 2014[/editline]
anyone have that video of that *kawaii* japanese woman on a megaphone talking about how worthless koreans are? ok imagine this: merkel denies the holocaust and then no one freaks out because germany "is pretty cool"
Didn't they do this years ago back in time or something? [t]http://www.reynalddrouhin.net/rd/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/burning-monk.jpg[/t]

Under the current interpretation of Article 9 in the event a joint battlegroup, a joint USN/JMSDF patrol openly comes under attack by say the Chinese they would not be able to do anything unless directly attacked, basically they'd have to watch their American battle buddies burn to prevent being in breach of Article 9. The change is going to give the JSDF alot more flexibility when it comes to doing things, more so he's looking to turn JSDF into a full time professional military. I will go on record and say I've worked with JMSDF and JGSDF personnel and they are some of the smartest, best and coolest individuals I've ever worked with, but they are NOT a full time military, infact they are not an actual military at all, they are a volunteer security force and cannot be held to contract. Example they can't hold you to a contract like other modern militaries, ergo you can just get up and quit at any time like it was McDonalds. This would also allow Japan a better expansion on their military capabilities. Article 9 was imposed on them by us. As for the protest, so what? 30-40k? I doubt it, and even if that was a remotely accurate number that still doesn't speak for the entire country, yeah some people don't like it but that's tough cookies for them. I've seen a lot of stuff since I came here 6 years ago. I've seen a communist party rallies, Ultra nationalist speeches and anti-US protests which happen quite often. Sure the change is somewhat unpopular but it's a long term, necessary step. Communist party rally last fall.
People willingly setting themselves on fire makes people think about an issue in a different way than suicide bombings.
I think it's because not only do suicide bombings kill/maim other people, it's usually a quick and painless death for the bomber. Self-immolation is slow and very painful for the person carrying it out, so seeing someone voluntarily inflict incredible pain on themselves to send a message is usually more effective as a result.
