About 50,000 years ago, modern day humans migrated out of Africa north to Europe and East Asia and met up with furrow-browed Neanderthals that had been in the colder climates for more than 100,000 years. Some of the two species mated. And then the Neanderthals died off as a species — except for what's left inside of us.
Scientists isolated the parts of the non-African modern human genetic blueprint that still contain Neanderthal remnants. Overall, it's barely more than 1 percent, said two studies released Wednesday in the journals Nature and Science.
However, in some places, such as the DNA related to the skin, the genetic instructions are as much as 70 percent Neanderthal and in other places there's virtually nothing from the species that's often portrayed as brutish cavemen.
Now we know, white supremacists want to devolve us into neanderthals!
Explains a lot about Britain then, I always thought EDL members bore a similarity
So white people are technically different due to having genetics of a separate race.
That's oddly unsettling having a very slight sliver of truth in people arguing about separate races.
From this moment on I will embrace my heritage

I'm surprised that humans could breed with Neanderthals at all considering they'd be genetically quite different

Mating is mating man.

Dogs of different breed can interbreed as well. Wouldn't be surprising.

It's no different than two different breeds of dogs mating. White people are mutts.
Edit: Dammit kurva

Indeed, shouldn't Neanderthals not be considered a different species then if mating was actually possible?
It's in the same classification regarding the species family so it would be possible.
I thought people already knew this to be honest. I guess when you call us homo sapiens and forget to call the other species by proper names, you lose the base from which we are similar. Species name proper for them is Homo neanderthalensis

If you look in genetics, there's a lot of interesting things. Like pacific sea countries typically have mixing with Denisovans.

The line between species is not always so clear. You can have intergrades/hybrids/etc. For example lions and tigers can produce fertile offspring without being classified as the same species
I thought we knew that Nordic folks have skull characteristics that remind us of neanderthals?
Well this makes sense. Neanderthal's were in the cold so were covered up/got less sun while Africans and shit got burnt.
That's how science works, right?
If you want to go further into it, you could argue that because of the mixed heritage that westerners have with Neanderthals, our craniums developed to grow larger than those without.
Also just FYI, it's Asians as well as whites, or at least lighter skinned ones.
If you want to be racist, you can point at a graph and be like. Well, I'm not implying anything. Okay. Just look at the numbers.

Hitler would've probably been terribly dissapointed.

It's not really all that hard to believe. Dogs were bred into specific species for specific purposes, but they also fulfill other purposes. Humans tend to mold with the terrain they inhabit, and from that, they'll generally only need to fulfill certain works to ensure their life.
Considering our species has evolved, lived in several different environments, dealt with several types of harshness and bred out genes which would be weaker in those environments, its just a matter of how you judge "race"
neanderthals were present in middle east too though
Of course we're different, skin color probably wasn't the only thing that changed while adapting to colder climates and environments.
Different doesn't mean separate race, though.
I don't look identical to my brother, but we're still related.
neanderthals were present in middle east too though
Title should be, "Lighter skin most likely came from Neanderthal."
How can I exploit this so I can go live in a cave?
Buy real estate with cave formations.
Disotell recently had his genome tested by a private company and found he's got more Neanderthal DNA than most people, about 2.9 percent: "I'm quite proud of that."
Lol, fucking wrecked.

How much Antarctica has no GDP? Anybody living there would have to be pretty pale to deal with the lack of sunlight. Checkmate racists.

DNA test from 23andMe.
how much did that cost?
I thought it was common knowledge that white people had more Neanderthal DNA than other races.
how much did that cost?
$99
how much did that cost?
Like 99 USD, the shipping to Sweden cost 90 USD so total of about 190 usd. It includes an FedEx express bag so that why the shipping is expensive.
Too bad FDA didn't like the test to they're only showing ancestry information for new people that order it.

Opposed to what? What did they show before?
duh, this i learned this early on in anthropology
the teacher basically said "if you have any european blood in you, you have neanderthal ancestors"
Opposed to what? What did they show before?
Like health information, what kind of diseases you were most likely to get and so on. People were acting out on the information as if diagnosed by a doctor, and FDA had enough.
Yeah but this isn't the same. But this doesn't show you anything like that.
You spit in a tube. They take the spit and run it through a DNA sequencer. And they use the data from the sequencer + data from various studies to give you the results.
My traits and ancestry results are spot on. Down to the exact colors of my eyes and my type of hair.
Regarding health things:

and when you open one of them you get, each tab is filled to the brim with details. Each backed up with studies.

Of course these can't be used to claim that you actually suffer from a disease, or even be used for any medical situation. I think it's just a fun thing and see no reason why it should be barred.
