I've been wanting to post this story so that the people who have a PS4 know about this problem, but it's been passed around the stupid parts of the major news outlets.
Get those cockroaches a better condo or something.
tbh another reason PC is better: No cockroackes in my PC.
tbh another reason PC is better: No cockroackes in my PC.
I've experienced this plenty, PC's are not safe.
How would you know if they're in there without opening the console up
I've experienced this plenty, PC's are not safe.
Why do you have a hole big enough in your case for a cockroach to climb through
How would you know if they're in there without opening the console up
They probably come out once in a while, maybe in numbers, which makes it fairly obvious that they're residing in there.
Why do you have a hole big enough in your case for a cockroach to climb through
They can crawl in through the gaps in your power supply fan. Even if you have dust covers you are not invulnerable. All it takes are a few baby cockroaches and you have an unknown infestation starting. Baby cockroaches are fucking tiny. And all cockroaches are like cats in that they are able to transform into a much smaller profile to somehow squeeze into the most unlikely of places. I've been working on computers for years and have seen them on numerous occasions. It's not just PS4s. Its anything electronic that's warm and dark. I've had a number of laptops with cockroaches. They have a very noticeable stench and the keyboards on these are usually coated in what I can only describe as an invisible, greasy film. Usually from loads of microscopic roach turds. I've seen little baby ones come crawling out of screw holes while a screw was still in the hole. The smell is the easiest way to know.
Why do you have a hole big enough in your case for a cockroach to climb through
Pretty much what haloguy said. Baby cockroaches are tiny as fuck and can fit in all sorts of vents and gaps in side panels. Plus a lot of the times I've come across them it's been in shitty OEM cases.
Bit dodgey he's acting like this is specifically a major issue with the PS4. I repair every major console daily and the units we get from Spain have plenty of roaches regardless of model. Granted, the PS3 slim does tend to have roaches the most but then those make up the bulk of shipments we receive. Luckily they aren't usually alive by the time they get here. Check the fan exhaust and you can usually see them or whatever debris they're leaving behind and of course a noticeable smell.

Can confirm my apartment is a roach motel, they absolutely love the ps4 and they short the fucker constantly. Good thing we're moving soon, just gotta prevent them moving with us.

Roachest are resilient little fuckers and the only thing that gets em is small scale chemical warfare.
I have a terminal fear of cockroaches and a PS4 at the foot of my bed Is some higher power just trying to mess with me
Man, talk about game-breaking bugs. I never realized cockroaches were so tiny, probably since I've never seen one myself, I always imagined them being at least twice the size of the one found in that PS4.

Some are ant-sized, others are the size of a stag beetle.

There's a really weird feeling when you see a roach, it's almost like seeing a mouse but worse. Seeing a spider and all that is one thing, but seeing a roach just fills me with this huge sense of paranoia. It might be the implication of an infestation
I fucking hate cockroaches. I moved to Florida, two different apartments over two years and they were EVERYWHERE in both. No matter what you do, make traps, buy traps, kill every single one you see, keep your place spotless, not leave food out anywhere, keep places that are usually damp completely dry, you just can get rid of them, only cut them back a little bit, could never afford to bomb the place. Lost a lot of food, spent a long time cleaning furniture, never lost any electronics though thankfully. My heart goes out to anyone that's ever had to deal with them, let alone lost an expensive piece of electronic to them.
I've never seen a cockroach in person, and I hope I never do. Only insect I wouldn't hesitate to exterminate.
what, how? you've NEVER seen a cockroach?
He probably lives in the Northern US and not in a big city. They're fairly rare up in those environments compared to big cities or the south.
I've never seen a cockroach in person, and I hope I never do. Only insect I wouldn't hesitate to exterminate.
me neither. my house is full of silverfish thing instead but they are not that bad

The danger comes from what this guy was talking about. When they're crawling around and end up bridging multiple solder joints. I can say with confidence that the power supply did not die from the cockroach that was sitting between that capacitor in the OP video. There wouldn't be a cockroach left if it touched both terminals while it was charged. Output capacitors on power supplies can stop a human heart and throw an adult across the room with how much explosive force they let off when shorted. The real cause of failures with cockroaches is the fact they shit on everything. It's like coating the board in millions of microscopic water droplets that eat away at the substrate and cause damage to solder joints, either corroding them and causing poor electrical contact or increasing electrical impedance which alters the flow of electricity. Really any bug infestation will cause this. It's one of those things where if you do have an infestation, it will most likely be a slow death for the device.

Am I the only one who's practically never even heard or thought about the possibility of a cockroach in my PS4?
Bug bombs. Bug bomb the entire domicile. Roachest are resilient little fuckers and the only thing that gets em is small scale chemical warfare.
Thats the game plan, bomb before we pack and bomb once we get to new place to be safe.
I've experienced this plenty, PC's are not safe.
this is why you buy filters / a case with filters I'm actually amazed that anyone WOULDN'T buy a filter
Don't roaches only come around if your house is a total mess? Food left out, trash on the floor, etc?
