Tory Chancellor George Osborne has revealed that the Coalition Government will not be implementing a tax break for video games.
Article So basically in March of this year the former Chancellor, Alistair Darling of the Labour Party, was intelligent enough to realise that the video game industry makes a shit load of cash each year and so promised tax breaks for the future. George Osborne has come along though and cancelled this in the new 2010 budget outlined today. I'm guessing a whole bunch of developers are going to bugger off to Canada where they can make their games for much cheaper. :britain:
Good thing I don't live in Britain.
Dig the hole deeper George.
Osbourne you're such an idiot.
It has begun...
Good thing I don't live in Britain.
Thanks for that useful and totally relevant comment. It doesn't directly affect anyone who isn't in the UK video games industry. Actually it affects us all in the same way because it means that, no matter where you live, British-made/published video games like Burnout and Grand Theft Auto will be made on much stricter budgets than those made in countries like Canada. So think before you post another meaningless comment.
Why the hell would they do this? I really hope it's not because they're on the "OMG VIDJYA GAEMS ARE BAD" bandwagon.
Why the hell would they do this? I really hope it's not because they're on the "OMG VIDJYA GAEMS ARE BAD" bandwagon.
because they're cutting spending and keeping taxes to pay off the deficit.
Why the hell would they do this? I really hope it's not because they're on the "OMG VIDJYA GAEMS ARE BAD" bandwagon.
It's not like that. It's more because they're out of touch on the worldwide impact that the video game industry has. I don't think it occurs to the Tory party that one of the biggest video game series in the world is made in the UK and that it is the fastest growing media industry in the world.
because they're cutting spending and keeping taxes to pay off the deficit.
They haven't struck the balance between cuts and encouragement.
England's fucked, they are cutting housing benefits which is the equivalent of taking away a lot of peoples homes. Bailiffs getting shot or beaten to death for trying to evict people from their own homes is not a strange occurrence, and now they are cutting the games industry, this directly effects me (at the bottom) and the higher ups equally. The lower/middle classes CANNOT take any more cuts.
While some of the cuts aren't popular, we need to cut cash to get out of the deficit; you just can't function in deep debt

Does the Vat increase mean video games prices will rise ?
Well then, don't blame the Conservative government as it's brown that got us into this mess.
not really problems were evident a long time before brown was even in politics, look more along the lines of thatcher.
Does the Vat increase mean video games prices will rise ?
I think it effects everything, not just games
I think it effects everything, not just games
children's clothes, food, newspapers and other items are still exempt from VAT
I think it effects everything, not just games
Yea i thought so
not really problems were evident a long time before brown was even in politics, look more along the lines of thatcher.
I appreciate that the Thatcher era moved our economy away from manufacturing and towards a service and finance based economy, but to suggest that this deficit is the fault of the Thatcher government is ridiculous. Labour has raised spending along with taxes excessively over the past 13 years, without any kind of forethought about what might happen when there is a recession and tax revenues decrease and benefit payments increase.
not really problems were evident a long time before brown was even in politics, look more along the lines of thatcher.
I'm talking about the huge loan we have.
England's fucked, they are cutting housing benefits which is the equivalent of taking away a lot of peoples homes.
this should have been done a long time ago, these people do not work, they just live of the hard working people who pay tax.
Well then, don't blame the Conservative government as it's brown that got us into this mess.
Um.. this is a worldwide recession. No government in any nation did anything to prevent it or, for the most part, could even see it coming. Blaming Brown entirely is retarded.
Labour really made a hash of public sector spending and the welfare system though, and they're a large part of why we're in such a deficit
Could be worse. We could be Greece. Comparatively to many nations we are doing just dandy. Not well, but the crisis is not nearly as bad as many would have you believe. [editline]05:35PM[/editline] Also, note use of the word "entirely".
Labour really made a hash of public sector spending and the welfare system though, and they're a large part of why we're in such a deficit
And conservatives are overblowing the issue to cut back on the public sector, and bring in more privatisation that will benefit the upper class.

I don't like it, but it's necessary. Better buy all my games and stuff now!
While some of the cuts aren't popular, we need to cut cash to get out of the deficit; you just can't function in deep debt
I guess we (U.S) can, in a way.
People who are complaining about this are clearly the sort of people who don't understand how money works.
