King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has said women will have the right to stand and vote in future local elections and join the advisory Shura Council as full members. "Because we refuse to marginalise women in society in all roles that comply with sharia, we have decided, after deliberation with our senior ulama [clerics] and others … to involve women in the Shura Council as members, starting from the next term," he said in a speech. "Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote," he added. Liberal activists in the country have long called for greater rights for women, who are barred from travelling, working or having medical operations without the permission of a male relative and are forbidden from driving. The changes will come after elections on Thursday, in which women are barred from voting or standing for office.
It's a step forward. They should let women drive, too. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/sep/25/saudi-arabia-women-vote-elections?newsfeed=true "O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness. On the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If you take a dislike to them, it may be that you dislike something and Allah will bring about through it a great deal of good. (Al-Qur'an 4:19) It's about time the Wahhabists started actually reading the Quran within its real context...
Kind of weird that they can vote but still can't drive Hopefully the first of many such changes

What I find kind of twisted is how; if the father in the family dies, then the mother still can't drive but rather, the oldest son (regardless of his age, can be 10, can be 11) is sent to driving school. They trust boys behind wheels better than they do women.
It's 2011 and women got the choice to vote but still are restricted to do certain activities and things? What.

Well just a 100 years too late compared to Europe, but still a step forward!
Such a backwards country.
Well just a 100 years too late compared to Europe, but still a step forward!
40 years. Switzerland imposed women's suffrage as late as 1971.
40 years. Switzerland imposed women's suffrage as late as 1971.
Imposed? "Woman, you shall vote and you shall like it."
Bad wording, indeed. You get my point.
Bad wording, indeed. You get my point.
You mean they approved women's suffrage.
Such a backwards country.
Not exactly backwards. Its just "Woman stay in kitchen, Men do everything else"
This council is just advisory, not actual legislative, right? Sure they can be voted onto it but the council itself is pretty unimportant.
And rightly so.
How edgy.
It's about time the Wahhabists started actually reading the Quran within its real context...
Or! Maybe no government should follow any religious laws.
Or! Maybe no government should follow any religious laws.
True, but my point was more that if you're going to follow an Islamic system, why interpret it in such a way that is discouraged by the religion itself? It's like building a steakhouse in the name of Hinduism, it makes no sense.
Saudi is a huge dump of a place, this is only the first step for them. EDIT: Medevilae; go stay in Saudi for two weeks and you'll know exactly what I mean
Kind of weird that they can vote but still can't drive Hopefully the first of many such changes
Women are terrible drivers, the west can learn something from Saudi Arabia here. :v:

King? What exactly do they vote for?
Next up, women allowed to wear jeans.
Next up, women allowed to wear jeans.
My god if you let women do that, men will not be able to control themselves and rape them all due to the high sexual arousal from such revealing clothing!
My god if you let women do that, men will not be able to control themselves and rape them all due to the high sexual arousal from such revealing clothing!
Heh, wonder how they'll react to women in mini-skirts.

Shouldn't the article say that women are allowed to vote for the right candidate lest disappear forever
Safety measures.
I agree with this, as I have to be my mom's GPS whenever she goes shopping. And thats by daytime. Don't even ask about night time. You'd feel safer in a blender.
