[release]A federal judge rules against ProtectMarriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage, saying the groups failed to prove they should be exempt from California's campaign disclosure laws. They alleged their donors had been harassed.
Supporters of the 2008 ballot measure that outlawed same-sex marriage in California lost their effort Thursday to block their past and future campaign finance records from public view because of alleged harassment of their donors.
A federal judge in Sacramento ruled against ProtectMarriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage in a nearly 3-year-old lawsuit, saying the groups failed to prove they should be exempt from state campaign disclosure laws.
"The winners here are really the voters of California," Lee said. "The 1st Amendment interest that the judge upheld in his ruling is the interest in having a robust democracy, an informed electorate and vigorous debate."
ProtectMarriage.com is a coalition of religious and conservative groups that sponsored and campaigned for the state constitutional amendment known as Proposition 8, which was approved by 52% of California voters and has been subject to continuing court challenges by same-sex marriage supporters. The National Organization for Marriage solicited donations that were used to qualify the measure for the November 2008 ballot.[/release]
It will soon be public record who supported bigotry.
It will be pretty predictable I'm guessing.
Mormon, Christian, and Catholic churches. And republicans.
Honestly, I didn't see why it was such a big deal.
Gays can pretty much get married already, it's just not called a marriage.
Do they get special perks by it being called "marriage" and not "domestic partnership"?

gays can't "pretty much get married already" in the US, stop spewing inaccuracies and do your homework before you post

How ignorant are you? A domestic partnership does not let you see a dying partner in the ER or OR. It does not let you inherit properties that your partner owned when they die. It does not let you have a real custody battle. It does not let you get by on "marriage" tax breaks. It doesn't have the same value or same meaning or even the same fucking uses.
But of course, they're the "same thing"

They changed that
It's the only thing they changed though

Oh, surprising.
:bravo:
Still a far cry from fair or equal.

Wait. So a marriage, which is held by the church, counts for all this stuff in the courts and legal systems?
Fuck, none of my government classes or anything covered this. I thought Church and State were supposed to be entirely separate.

Marriage can be secular you know. Just because people decide to do it in sun god temples or whatever the fuck doesn't make it inherently religious.
Ha, can't wait for this to go public. Wonder if we'll get any Kochs on the list...
It will be very interesting to see who donated. I though donations where public records anyway, some high-profile people must have donated if they wanted to keep the lid on it.
Didn't the Mormons fund like 90% of it?

disregarding the legal benefits of marriage a couple of others pointed out, allowing a civil union but not a marriage is pretty much a big middle finger to gay people, pretty much telling them they're second class citizens that their marriage is inherently worth less than heterosexual marriage.
and more importantly, why are there all these lame cop out "stepping stones" for any real progress? E.g civil unions for gay marriage, medical marijuana for legalised marijuana, obamacare for universal healthcare etc.
goddamn some people really are stupid

Over 90%
I'm still hit in the face with how stupid and barbaric it is that a first-world nation can vote on, and fund against basic human rights like marriage and the right to love who you want. Imagine the uproar and the furor that would be created if there was a proposition to remove marriage rights and 1st class citizen status from Conservatives and those who belong to Fundamentalist religious groups.
Oh well, homosexuality and transgenderism are slowly becoming more and more accepted and tolerated. It's a slow fight but I'm sure we'll have some form of equality someday.
In California, these people pushed ads on to try and promote Proposition 8 like it was going to save us from the economic woes of recent times, and it's no surprise they'd be anything but transparent about their actions. They're the worst kind of political agitators.
disgonbegood.
I'm okay with this. I'll get my Louisville slugger and my Docs ready.
