• CERN to open portal to parallel universe in days
The staggeringly complex LHC ‘atom smasher’ at the CERN centre in Geneva, Switzerland, will be fired up to its highest energy levels ever in a bid to detect - or even create - miniature black holes. If successful a completely new universe will be revealed – rewriting not only the physics books but the philosophy books too. It is even possible that gravity from our own universe may ‘leak’ into this parallel universe, scientists at the LHC say. The experiment is sure to inflame alarmist critics of the LHC, many of whom initially warned the high energy particle collider would spell the end of our universe with the creation a black hole of its own.
http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/565315/Scientists-at-Large-Hadron-Collider-hope-to-make-contact-with-PARALLEL-UNIVERSE-in-days [editline]22nd March 2015[/editline] The Stargate is coming!
Prepare yourselves everyone! The resonance cascade is upon us!
Any more sources on this? The express had an article on ebola coming from space a while back. If this is true though, sounds neat.
Almost as absurd as that time in the 19th century people blocked airflow into their houses because they thought a comet skimming the atmosphere would turn all the nitrogen into nitrous oxide and people would die from laughing too much. Afaik higher-energy cosmic particles smash into the atmosphere all the time, and bugger all's happened.
As long it isn't a time machine..... But really, this sounds fake as fuck. Even more how they used caps for PARALLEL UNIVERSE.
Uh I am not sure what's the idea behind this insanely sensationalist article. LHC is still recovering from the (over a year long) downtime during which it went through the upgrade for the higher energies, and they are still not even achieving a circulation of particle beam - a segment of the accelerator is still not even reaching operational state. It's still not even doing what it used to do routinely before the shutdown, and it's uncertain how long will it take to get it to that level, but it might easily be whole weeks. Don't expect it to achieve anything groundbreaking for at least months from now. The thing is not even barely working right now.
They are smashing protons together at 99% the speed of light creating conditions which dont exist anywhere in our universe and are predicted to create a black hole. Black holes swallow up matter, planets, suns as they create intense gravitation. They cant be controled any easier than an exploding atomic bomb can be. Please stop gambling with our future with science you dont fully understand. Such a ceated black hole could swallow our planet in seconds just as is well documented in astronomy. Would they be effected by the gravitational force of the Earth or Sun? What if the sudden "disappearance" of certain particles is simply because they operate outside of gravitational bounds, and thus remain in the space they are created. Since we are flying through space at speeds I do not know off the top of my head, the particle would appear to disappear almost instantly, when in fact it is just remaining stationary relative to us. I know nothing about physics btw this is just theorycrafting.
We're doomed
Prepare for unforeseen consequences.
After this, we should go to Mars and start searching for Prothean technology.

Everything is relative. There's no universal reference point, no [0,0,0], you could measure velocity or position of particles or objects against. So no, this thought that something might "stick" to "space itself" while everything else moves is wrong, not because could be a particle that would be uninfluenced by this or that, but because there is apparently no "space itself" that the rest of observable existence could relate itself to.
Wow, it'll be just like sliders :v: :

I swear to god if parallel universe me comes to visit and he's rich as fuck and covered in hot babes I'm going to throw a fit
Was expecting The Onion
I hope the other universe(s) still have the same sort of physics so we can use all our guns and shit when we invade.
Was expecting The Onion
It's the Daily Express, it's about as reliable as the Onion.
This is one of those Chinese whispers articles, right? Could someone link a more directly sourced article?
I hope our universe won't end on a cliffhanger forever!
Imagine if we discovered another universe before Half Life 3 released :suicide:
Put the parallel universe in a box, and negotiate a trade with the people of the parallel universe to swap their box with our universe in it for our box with their universe in it. We would have a box that contains our own universe.
Hey now, thats a bit inconsiderate.
Heh fuck those other worlders
Hey now, thats a bit inconsiderate.
It's not a parallel universe, it's parallel dimensions. It's basically exactly the same as before when shitheads wouldn't stop using the term God Particle for the Higgs Boson.

The LHC project will be wrapping up in the next 7-10 years or so. What they're attempting to do when they switch it back on is detect more Higgs particles (among others). The idea is that higher-energy collisions result in more precise measurements of mass, spin (angular momentum), coupling (how particles interact with one another) and so on. When it's switched back on it'll be running pretty much as well as it can (about 250 GeV I think), but it can't really be improved further. That's why physicists are designing a new, linear particle accelerator (since linear colliders don't lose as much of the beam energy through radiation) that's due to start construction in (most likely) Japan in the next two years or so. The more precise we can make these measurements, the better we'll be able to tell if these 125 GeV particles we found in 2012 are indeed Higgs bosons or something new entirely. We should also be able to find out if these particles fit with our standard model for particle physics. The whole thing about creating "miniature black holes" is more to do with the energy and content of the collisions. The LHC is all about simulating conditions in the early universe (back when it was just minute fractions of a second old). I also note how the article does not include a single source.
:downs:
~~~~~~the wolf is guarding the hen house~~~~~~
Who knows how long is booting it again going to take.
This is some Steins;Gate shit right here
:downs:
idiots trying to lecture leading experts in their own field nice
Well, this should be interesting if nothing else.
