NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina man whose hidden cocaine was found by a police dog that bit into the package and died has been sentenced to more than 11 years in prison.
Federal prosecutors said a judge Friday ordered 33-year-old Jamie Gonzalez-Lopez to spend 135 months behind bars. He pleaded guilty to several drug charges.
Authorities say undercover federal agents ordered a kilogram of cocaine from Gonzalez-Lopez in July 2011. Gonzalez-Lopez then hid the drugs in a Brunswick County field while waiting to meet the "buyer."
Agents arrested Gonzalez-Lopez, and a sheriff's drug-sniffing Belgian Malinois named Viper was sent into the field to find the drugs. Viper accidentally bit into the package and bit and shook it, ingesting a fatal amount of cocaine.
More than 200 people turned out for a memorial service for the dog.
Why a 11 year sentence when the dog bit it out of natural instincts?
Maybe because he also had shitloads of drugs
Sure man deserved some sort of penalty for drugs, but its the dogs own stupidity or nature that god dog killed.
To be fair, 11 years is a pretty common sentence for people trafficking drugs, especially the more infamous ones like cocaine. Sometimes if the guy's lucky, it'll be lowered to 8, but 11 is not far from the norm at all, considering he also killed an animal.
11 years for a dog. as if that wouldn't be ridiculous enough 11 years because the dog did something he had no control over is just fucked

He's not getting 11 years for killing a dog, he got 11 years for possession/trafficking/selling cocaine. Those are three felonies and 11 years is a very common verdict for them, at least compared to a vast number of other similar cases. The dog's death may have played into the case, but not the punishment.
i hope he gets charged for DOGSLAUGHTER
He can only be charged for the ownership of the large amounts of cocaine. He shouldn't be charged for the murder of the dog because it was not a foreseeable consequence of his actions.
Think of this- a truck is driving over the speed limit and a plane is about to land. The plane hits truck and the pilot dies. Should the driver be punished for the murder of a pilot doing his job or should he be punished for speeding?
Police dogs are expensive as fuck. It's not a small thing.
Police dogs are expensive as fuck. It's not a small thing.
It isn't, its death is both sad and incredibly financially draining on the police force of the city. The article is sensationalist as fuck though because the guy isn't getting any extra time because he killed the dog, the dog just happened to die and the guy got 11 years. 11 years is the norm and is the time period in most other similar cases of selling/possessing/trafficking cocaine.

yeah that makes alot more sense
What the fuck. Why does everyone keep fixating on the dog dieing part, as if thats why he got given 11 years...

Because what would get more views on a news site?
"Man sentenced to 11 years in prison for cocaine"
or
"Man sentenced to 11 years in prison for cocaine THAT KILLED AN INNOCENT ANIMAL DOING IT'S JOB"
What the fuck. Why does everyone keep fixating on the dog dieing part, as if thats why he got given 11 years...
Because nobody read beyond the title.
What the fuck. Why does everyone keep fixating on the dog dieing part, as if thats why he got given 11 years...
because the only original thing about this is the fact he killed a dog. drug trafficking isn't exactly news
It shocks me how little people know of the Justice system and Law.
Jesus Christ 200 people. I won't even get that at my funeral.
Sure man deserved some sort of penalty for drugs, but its the dogs own stupidity or nature that god dog killed.
To be honest, i thought they trained em to sniff out for drugs and that but not sniff and eat em. No offense.

That dog had a lot of friends.
That dog had a lot of friends.
Well, to be fair, it's much easier for a person to make a lot of enemies, and much harder to make friends than it is for a dog. As long as he bites nobody, he's pretty much good with everybody, especially considering his job helped people.
poor dog
polices fault for using them as unknowing slaves for their dumb agendas really.
Police dogs are expensive as fuck. It's not a small thing.
Not his fault, is it?
Charge the drugs with murder.

Would probably end up charged with manslaughter.
The logic of facepunch:
- A "regular" person who obviously has some kind of mental problem decides to kill an animal: "What a bastard they should die"
- A drug dealer gets 11 years in prison because of what he did, he just happens to kill a dog indirectly with his drugs: "11 years is too much, poor guy"
I was talking to a k9 officer by me and he said they train the dogs to find the smell, let the owner know. Maybe even rustle it out a little bit so the officer can see it. Then the dog gets a toy. They basically train them "find drugs and get a toy reward"

seriously ignore the title,
the op just wants to be stupid

FLAWLESS LOGIC
never change face punch
If it wasn't already pointed out that the prison sentence has more to do with the drugs than the dog i'd make some mention ragging on police raids where normal practice is to shoot all pets in the house whether or not they pose a threat, or its even the right house. But since this is not the case, fuck cops petmurdering whether or not there's a jail sentence to compare it to.

That's not even anything alike at all because it's not like the druck trafficker was hiding cocaine packets everywhere with the specific purpose of killing police dogs with them.

He didn't get time for the dog, he got time for the drug charges.
Christ, people need to learn how to read. It is literally the second sentence.
He pleaded guilty to several drug charges.
Cause you know, the fact he had a kilo of coke and was involved in trafficking drugs and distribution of drugs has nothing to do with it. Just another sensationalist title that the media is using to spur up bullshit.
