A dazed Ian Thorpe was detained by police near his parents' home last night.
Source: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/2014/02/03/16/58/ian-thorpe-detained-by-police-reports
A 14-year-old boy witnessed a man attempting to break into a van.

When police arrived the 31-year-old was sitting in a car nearby.
How did the situation escalate from some random breaking into a van to a national champion being arrested for being drunk in a car nearby the scene? And when did police start taking tips from children?
How did the situation escalate from some random breaking into a van to a national champion being arrested for being drunk in a car nearby the scene? Several points: it makes no difference what so ever that he's a star athlete here, it doesn't place him above the law. Also, he wasnt arrested, he was detained. I'd suggest you look up the difference between those two terms. [editline]3rd February 2014[/editline] He's probably going to be in shit anyways for being drunk in a car. Sounds like he's up to no good.
Media is reporting he's currently suffering from a lot of mental problems so he's going to most likely be sent to rehab
well this isn't fully sick at all

He was doing nothing wrong. Being drunk in a car is not against any law. Drunk driving is against the law -- not what he was doing. rekt
He didn't break any laws
There was obviously reasonable suspicion for him to be detained. You know, because he was intoxicated and near a crime scene. But also the police may know something we don't.
It's his word against some snot nose kid.
Who are you going to trust, the drunk man with reasonable suspicion for committing a crime or the kid looking out for his community?
Arrested, detained, I don't care. He was doing nothing wrong.
Police may not completely know what happened yet, and as there was reasonable suspicion against him regarding the crime scene THAT WAS WHY HE WAS DETAINED
Being drunk in a car is not against any law. Drunk driving is against the law -- not what he was doing.
Being drunk in the driver's seat, even with the car turned off, is against the law afaik. And only the police know at the moment what's up with him being drunk in his car.
rekt
Are you literally retarded?
And when did police start taking tips from children?
What makes you think this? If children can't ever be reliable sources of info then child molestation cases would pretty much never be investigated. [editline]3rd February 2014[/editline]
Being drunk in a car is not against any law. Drunk driving is against the law -- not what he was doing.
I've personally seen someone arrested for DWI because they were smoking weed in their parked car at their own home while sitting in the driver seat. I imagine the law that let them do that probably applies to alcohol too, but feel free to post a source and show everyone that I'm wrong.
There was obviously reasonable suspicion for him to be detained. You know, because he was intoxicated and near a crime scene.
Who are you going to trust, the drunk man with reasonable suspicion for committing a crime or the kid looking out for his community?
Kids are not like that these days.
Police may not completely know what happened yet, and as there was reasonable suspicion against him regarding the crime scene THAT WAS WHY HE WAS DETAINED
Police abuse.
Police abuse.
Police (in the US) can detain you for whatever the fuck reason they want. It's not the same as being arrested, they have to let you go eventually if they're detaining you unless they get sufficient confession out of you to make an arrest or something. Like, boohoo, you lose a few hours of your time and get asked a bunch of questions, but it's not some huge violation of your rights. You legally don't have to tell them a god damned thing, and they legally have to let you go if they can't get a good reason to arrest you and in cases like this being convicted tends to rely on your own confession. Now, that being said, police abuse does happen in the US and people's rights do get ignored at times, I just don't think that's the case here.

Well, apologies, I certainly don't have a good knowledge of how Australian law works. My only personal experience really is a close family friend of mine from Australia having to fight a case against a man who sexually abused her when she was young, so I just can't really follow with your "when did police start taking tips from children?" comment since I've had a bit of "well, why the fuck wouldn't they?" experience. Sorry if I seemed a bit over-sensitive about it.

Are you saying you'd rather the officers left him alone because, "WELL HE'S NOT DRIVING IT! AM I RIGHT?! LOOPHOLE!", only for drive drunk after and potentially hurt someone then to just detain him for it?

Apparently he's in hospital now. http://www.smh.com.au/sport/swimming/ian-thorpe-admitted-to-rehabilitation-clinic-20140203-31x46.html
rekt
Please stop saying that after every post.

Did the cop see him sitting in the car in his driveway and just walk up to the car? I would be furious, like Vegeta super saiyan fucking seriously pissed off, but also stoned so I'd probably get my ass beat too but at least he'd know.
national champion being arrested for being drunk in a car nearby the scene?
The linked article doesn't mention alcohol at all, and BBC says there was no alcohol in his system.
I feel really bad for him. He doesn't need all this attention. Depression sucks, but having major depression and having all your doings reported by the media would be horrible. The amount of shit that the media have given him in the past is dreadful.
