All the buildings Hitler planned are so gaudy, ugly, and ridiculous.
Wow. A city design where transportation is only feasible with Segways. Truly a man ahead of his time.
It is quite impressive to see the Coliseum in Nuremberg in person.
Abit of a shame they only use it to hold Christmas decorations. Would make for an amazing modern musical hall and still send a powerful message that counter's its dark history.

Sorry, Palace of the Soviets just called, it asks not to share its title of "gaudy, ugly and ridiculous" with Hitler's little toy projects.

The people who wanted to build it are scumbags but I'll be lying if I thought that didn't look supremely badass.

Not that big of a loss tbh, considering that otherwise it would've been defaced and made into a warehouse or something, as it was customary for Bolshevik's treatment of unique architecture. When it turned out that the Palace building was, to say the least, kinda unrealistic, they filled the hole and made an open-air swimming pool "Moskva" there instead, so at least people got something interesting out of it.

looks bad hitler
Did the soviets not see the irony in toppling the tsar and then making grand palaces for themselves?
Well to be fair it wasn't really supposed to be a proper government building, no one would live there or even work on a regular basis, so it's hardly a proper "palace". More like a senate building for the Supreme Soviet to gather up once in a while and vote on major decisions and to celebrate stuff.
But yeah, ironic as fuck to build what amounts to a huge commie "Cathedral" for a strictly materialistic "rational" regime.

that thing looks fucking huge though. and it was going to be empty most of the time?

Wait that's a swimming pool? I thought it was a waste treatment plant or something before I read your post. That thing looks so industrial.

Well it is a former foundation pit for a mcfuckhuge building, so... And it looks that way mostly because of how the picture was taken, with the winter cityscape in the background. I mean, soviets weren't known for treating the people well, but a waste treatment plant in the heart of the city among the residential blocks was probably too far for even for them.

Imagine armies of cleaners hired to do upkeep on a superstructure that's only ever used a few times a year. I'd hope a job like that pays well.
They actually included the great hall in Wolfenstein:

Tatlin's Tower was even more interesting

Taller than the Eiffel Tower, had giant rotating structures in it, and able to project messages onto the clouds. In 1919. Shame it and the Palace of the Soviets never got built, architecture from totalitarian regimes is always interesting.
They actually included the great hall in Wolfenstein:
It's interesting how differently this city appears in various media. Wolfenstein shows it as a very utilitarian, bleak metropolis, which was almost completely rebuilt from the ground up. On the other hand, in The Man in the High Castle it appears to be a very liveable, green city which kept its character.

sometimes it feels weird to remember that even extreme grim darkness was inspired directly by actual real life things like this
Nazi architecture is both imposing and evil at the same time. I walked around the Tempelhof terminal building in Berlin while on my way to drink beer in the old runway area, and I had to stop several times to just stare at that massive structure. It really looks like a villain's lair from certain angles (doesn't help that some of the old eagle statues still remain on it).

Tatlin's Tower had less to do with totalitarian architecture (despite being officially called "Monument to the International" or something like that, don't remember) and more to do with the dominating motif in Russian avant-garde, beauty in all things mechanical, in technological progress; the so-called "machine art" and other concepts of the sort. Early Soviets borrowed and relied very heavily on it for the visual style.
It wasn't until Stalin's reign when the more brutal and blandly oppressive elements of constructivist art and architecture started mixing with antique motifs.
am I the only one who hates the american style of documentaries where there's constant "epic" music and wild transitions and deep voice narrators
I would love to watch this if it were made by BBC but I can't handle Discovery channel "documentaries"
