• May 21st, The Circassian Day of Mourning

Hello, to start with this thread, I'd like to explain a few things. On May 21st, 1864, Aleksandr II had declared victory over the indigenous ethnic group of the North Caucasus, the Circassians (an English name, while most called themselves the Adyghe). He later approved a plan to deport the entire Adyghe population from the Caucasus. This mass deportation was very effective, pushing 90% of the surviving population (roughly 1.5 million Adyghes were killed during the war ) out of the Caucasus. Many of the survivors of the war died of disease, exhaustion, and famine on the long trek in an uncertain world. The day that Aleksandr II declared victory in the war that lasted 101 years would forever be remembered as the Circassian Day of Mourning. The population that was forced out were sent to the Ottoman Empire. The area that most of them were forced to leave however, was called Sochi. Most of you should know what Sochi is, it's where the next Winter Olympics is going to be held. A lot of people died there, and even more history is preserved there. This place was lived in since before recorded history, and yet, the Russian government sees fit to celebrate "unity among humans" and "sportsmanship" on the killing grounds of the indigenous people of the Caucasus. I find it disgusting that the Russian government is willing to destroy ancient tombs, graves, and evidence of what happened over a hundred years ago. In fact, in 2014, it will be the 150th anniversary of the Circassian Genocide. It's something extremely sad to witness this, because so many of my people were killed, or forced out of their homeland, from the spot nearly every country in the world will be celebrating in 2014. I'm sorry for not going into this further, but I have to help with the organizing of a demonstration in NYC tomorrow for May 21st. I plan on adding more if I can later, but I just wanted to share some untold history with other Facepunchers. I'll try to add some media later, but for now I can't. As part of the international diaspora, I feel it's my duty to show what's been covered up by the Russian government. I hope you can all feel sympathy for such a disgusting act on their part. If you have anything questions or comments etc., just post here or PM me, and I'll try to update with more information later. -Update- It's May 21st in the U.S., and we're going to be leaving soon to New York City. The first stop is going to be the Russian Mission, and then after that, Times Square. Yesterday, I forgot to mention that the history was made when Georgia was the first country to recognize the Circassian Genocide. This is really important to our cause. With this, other countries will be more inclined to do the same. I'll update with more information when we get to the Russian Mission.
Sorry, I guess?
Most of you should know what Sochi is, it's where the next Winter Olympics is going to be held.
All in favor for not celebrating the winter Olympic 2014?
This was an interesting read, OP! Please post again. [sp]Don't[/sp]
This was actually very interesting and informative, thanks.
Doesn't matter we die tomorrow
I've TBH have never heard of these events....
Interesting, never knew about this. Now that I think about it a girl in my school is from Sochi.
Did you know that Germany hosted the 2006 FIFA World Cup? 60 years ago, 10 million Jewish people and minorities died in that country. Did you also know that Atlanta, Georgia hosted the 1996 Olympic Games in where they celebrate the unity of Humanity in where back in 1960's, Atlanta, Georgia was one of the most harshly segregated cities in all of America? Barring minorities basic rights and lynching and beating African Americans?
I thought it was an interesting post until "I am disgusted with russia and what happened 150 years ago hurr durr"
I thought it was an interesting post until "I am disgusted with russia and what happened 150 years ago hurr durr"
That's like saying I'm ashamed to be Chinese because we, as a people suppressed a Tibetan population and murdered 60 million Chinese during the reign of Communism.
Doesn't matter we die tomorrow
we're judged tomorrow :eng101:
Stop with these threads, they're creeping me out.
The Buffalo Bills hold a game in Orchard Park many times each year. Orchard Park is where my grandpa died of a heart attack twelve years ago.
That's like saying I'm ashamed to be Chinese because we, as a people suppressed a Tibetan population and murdered 60 million Chinese during the reign of Communism.
Well not really since that's still going on.
Updated the OP with some short information for now.
Well not really since that's still going on.
Well, not to a huge extent like back during the 60's [editline]21st May 2011[/editline]
Updated the OP with some short information for now.
What makes your peoples' genocide a priority over other's? This is not the first time this type of things happen, the diference is that very little people outside the range of eastern europe know about this story and I believe it's Russia's responsability to acknowledge the massacre and have some respect for the victims.
So you hate Russia because of something that happened 150 years and a few regimes ago. Makes total sense, I guess. :downs:
i thought circassians were an alien from star trek?
i thought circassians were an alien from star trek?
They are.
Doesn't matter we die tomorrow
No, silly. That big bearded guy torments us for five months and then Earth turns into one of Mario's fireballs.
Doesn't matter we die tomorrow
Hey look it's tomorrow and were not dead
-snip, dumb-
Who knew that 147 years after this event, a crazy man told the world would end.
