[quote]A BANK robber was convinced by staff to sit down and arrange a loan to help his financial problems.
Mark Smith, 59, allegedly told bank workers in Watsonville California, that he had a bomb in his backpack and that he would detonate it inside the building unless he was given $2000.
But instead, Mr Smith was convinced by the bank manager to take a loan from the branch to solve his cash flow problems.
While Mr Smith waited patiently for the her to retrieve loan paperwork, the manager simply called emergency services.
"Quick-thinking staff kept the man calm and distracted him with some paperwork until we arrived' Lieutenant Darren Thompson told the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Police arrested Mr Smith on suspicion of attempted robbery, as well as charges of making a false bomb report.
Mr Smith was not carrying weapons of any kind, Lieut Thompson added.

And a really dumb criminal.
paper beats bomb as well as rock!
Was the guy insane perchance?
He probably wasn't insane, if he wanted such a relatively small sum like $2000, he probably had something in mind.
And considering he was convinced to take a loan instead, he probably really didn't want to go through with it, if anything I feel a bit of resentment towards the bank officials for getting him arrested but they were probably scared shitless of him, so I don't blame them.
I live like 20 minutes from Watsonville and I didn't hear about this, but this is pretty awesome.
It would have been so much more badass if instead of calling the authorities the bank manager would have actually gotten him a loan that the guy could have used to get his life back into gear and would have eventually paid back.
Classic disney setup papa needed 2k to get the farm back..
Mr. Smith
It was probably just money to pay for medical expenses for his dying wife or some shit. Way to go bank manager!

Or maybe it wasn't.
The robber and the boss deserve a medal.
He obviously wasn't a very dedicated robber.
Looks like someone put all his skill points into Speech.
Why didn't they go through with the loan? Kind of an asshole thing to do, especially since he's probably an innocent old man who honestly believed them (he's 59).

You can't really expect them to go through with it though since he said he was carrying a bomb, it would indeed have been much better but you can't expect it from them.
Clever
Reminds me of that chick who managed to convince the robber not to do it by preaching gospel to him.

Why would you feel resentment toward them, he threatened and tried to rob them. They did what any reasonable person should have.

Yeah, a guy who walks into a bank and says he has a bomb is totally going to pay back his loan.
I thought it was more something along the lines of William Fichtner in The Dark Knight
as in, with a shotgun
bank manager karma minus 10
This guy is smart.
