In general terms, what do you guys think is the best hatchback? When i say hatchbacks, i mean the bigger ones like the golf or the mazda 3, not the tiny womens cars like the nissan micra.
ford focus
I've been looking at Mazda3s lately. They are pretty decent cars actually.

Ferd focus RteenhundredS
pulsar gtir
Ferrari FF
s13 240sx fastback
Kia Forte 5-Door :smug:
Lada Niva oh wait that's an SUV
Is this a what car the buy thread? If so, are you looking for something practical or something fun? Ford Focus is practical and reasonably good to drive, bit of an all rounder but not great at anything. The golf is in the same boat, in the UK they are ridiculously common so owning one wouldn't be special. If you're looking for something fun to drive then without a doubt it has to be the Honda Civic Type R, not the best handling front wheel drive but by far the best hot hatch, EP3 models are the one to watch out for, the later models seem to be more tamed.
the only decent hatchback really. it's a fairly nice car to drive. the dealer (in australia) was telling us that 3,000 focus' are sold daily in the UK. eeek. [editline]22nd May 2011[/editline] ahh, you're aussie. get a focus. will go nicely on our patchwork roads. the mazda 3 is ugh - it's just boring. otherwise get a sedan. no other good looking hatches.
yep, focus
or a subu hatch. they're nice too.
just realized i said RS :v: i mean i guess you could attempt to get one of them
They sold 'em in Mexico
are you a car hipster? whats wrong with having a common car?
Nothing's wrong with it, but wouldn't you rather drive something a bit different that stands out from the crowd?
are you a car hipster? whats wrong with having a common car?
bland and boring
get a Mazda 3 if you don't mind barfing all over yourself every time you go look at it [editline]22nd May 2011[/editline]

VW Fastback. Classic.
VW Fastback. Classic.
there's one for sale on the same page I found my Jeep :allears:
VW Golf. Personally, my favorite
vw golf > ford focus > vw polo > * > mazda 3 [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline] that smile of the mazda 3 makes me cringe
vw golf > ford focus > vw polo > * > mazda 3 [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline] that smile of the mazda 3 makes me cringe
The polo is a supermini, and frankly, the Mazda's smile isn't really THAT bad. They're changing it up anyway due to backlash. I do wish we got more of the hot hatches over in the US. The Renault Megane RS and Clio RS, Peugeot 207 and 308 GTI, BMW 1 Series hatch, and the Suzuki Swift, just to name a few.

The Mazda smile isn't that bad, but there are much nicer looking front ends, i.e. the lancer front end. It's still enough for me to hate the car - plus it drives like shit. i hope they change it to something decent. it could be a very decent competitor - but it's been a smile for ages. they're in no hurry to change it, that's for sure. also, if you wanted a new car, the focus should be in run out globally because of the new 2012 focus that is already out in the US [editline]23rd May 2011[/editline]
I do wish we got more of the hot hatches over in the US.
aren't you scared of being run over by trucks that outnumber you 5 to 1?
We have plenty of hot hatchbacks in America. The Civic Si, Golf GTI... I really don't know what else you need, those are the essentials. :v
If you can find one in good condition, you should look at a mk1 Golf. The Rabbit GTI (sport version of the mk1 Golf) can be had for cheap these days. Let's see what Jeremy Clarkson has to say about it!
The greatest car of the 20th century
If you want something a bit newer from VW, go for the mk4 Golf/GTI. I own the 1.8 turbo version, and I have to say I quite like it. Bought it at 65k now at 90, and the only issue I've had was a cracked radiator one summer. It is by no means the fastest car out there, but it's fun to drive  Anything newer than the mk4 will be a bit expensive. Plus on a more personal level, I feel anything newer than the mk4 (even though faster) doesn't quite have the character of a "Golf". Even then, the mk4 is nowhere near as brilliant as the mk1.
going to take a wild stab and say anything turbo charged is out of the question. oh aussie laws.
