Sam played at Missouri, and came out as gay in media interviews earlier this year. His team and coaches knew his secret and kept it for his final college season. He went on to have the best season of his career: He was the Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year.

wow it's almost like your sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well you can run and throw a ball
has a lot to do with how experienced you are in handling them
has a lot to do with how experienced you are in handling them
heyyoooooooooo
Why is it mentioned that his team and coaches kept it a secret? Would that have really caused such an uproar? Would coming out as gay have prevented him in anyway from having the best season of his college career? Good for him, though, it's great that the NFL is continuing to embrace today's diverse culture. This makes me want to look up MLB, I don't recall hearing about any openly gay baseball players...

As fucked up as that is, that's probably what would've happened.
I guess he's gonna be doing some ramming.
W-We're actually doing it aren't we? We're chipping away at homophobia!
Why is it mentioned that his team and coaches kept it a secret? Would that have really caused such an uproar?
Unfortunately, yes. Bigotry is very much alive and well in the USA and even here in Canada. People get death threats for the stupidest things and we all know how obsessive some fans can be over their favorite teams.
wow it's almost like your sexual orientation has nothing to do with how well you can run and throw a ball
the irony in this statement being that michael sam is a DE meaning he doesn't run or throw the ball

Kinda' depressing to see something like this is important and controversial enough to be a headline. Like someone said before, if they play well, who cares? Unless sexual harassment arises, it should be fine as long as they carry their own weight. That being said, I wouldn't put it past them to set arbitrary standards for "gay" players over "straight" players.
This is a really old WKUK skit, but It's still relevant.
Interesting that he went from being a first/second auto-pick to seventh round. Purely coincidental, I'm sure.

i don't think people really understand just how big of a deal this is. the nfl is the most homophobic athletic organization there is. this only opens the door for more athletes to be able to accept who they are
