Here's one I've never seen before. Post bands/songs/albums that opened up whole new genres for you. Or maybe just music in general. Simple idea, I'm sure you can think of plenty. The album "The Midnight Organ Fight" by Frightened Rabbit. I'm going to call this my gateway to music overall. Since before this band, I'd never been into music much at all. I maybe listened to Songbird by Oasis or Keep The Car Running by Arcade Fire a lot before that, along with Weird Al and music from TV shows. It was during the first while after I'd gotten into internet forums when I decided to start listening to more music, seeing people online raving about music they were listening to. Deciding that having something to listen to while I was online, I decided to go looking up some music. I remembered my sister's love for Frightened Rabbit, so I went ahead and listened to the album, and absolutely loved it. From there, I found Dear and the Headlights and As Tall As Lions through related artists on Last.fm, and from there got more and more into music, listening to loads of indie rock that kept getting recommended to me on Last.fm because of those first few bands. And look at me go. I owe so much to this album. Not sure if it's unusual for the first album you ever listened to to remain your favourite album ever after that. Here's the first metal song I ever enjoyed. "Die Weide und der Fluß" by Equilibrium. I remember the feeling of "Oh wow, this is actually great" while playing this on Audiosurf, having had it sent over by a friend of mine, Joe. Beforehand, I was just another one of those people who couldn't stand metal vocals, and so stayed away from the whole thing. But the instrumental in this was just so fantastic, the vocals couldn't put me off at all. And from there I learned to at least tolerate the vocals enough to listen to more. I'm only just recently learning to like the vocals though. First post-rock song I ever enjoyed. "Your Hand In Mine" by Explosions In The Sky. I guess before this I'd never really listened to post-rock anyway. But this was the first I'd ever really listened to. Again, this one was sent to me by that same person, Joe.

I can't stand them now but Tool was the first non mainstream non pop groups I got into. Pink Floyd was also one of the first bands I got into. I don't listen to them too much but I like them every now and then.

Insomnium Suddenly I was on my melodeath period that lasted for one summer Opeth Suddenly I was on a quest for "artistic" music, don't ask ISIS Suddenly sludge, sludge errywhere.
A few songs from this played a lot on one of my last.fm ska stations, so I listened to them and ended up downloading all their stuff from their website which I totally love. One of them had a cover of an Andrew Jackson Jihad song which ended up getting me into folk punk.
Before anyone says anything, this has to be one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard. Incursio sends shivers down my spine EVERY TIME I hear violins rise and fall. And led me to start digging around for other old soundtracks of some of my favorites.
The first time i heard holy wars... Mind=Blown. Got me into NWOBHM, i love this whole album. First album with rough vocals that i liked. Great album. Really got me into death metal.
Architects into the whole screaming part of music and low-tuned guitars blink 182 into punk Periphery into djent music (although it's not a genre it's a pretty big scene)
Pretty much made me realise that I can enjoy growls.
It got me into Turntabalism and eventually Hip-Hop as a whole.
In Flames got me into death metal. I just picked up an album without listening to it because there was an FP thread where someone said "they're the only metal you'll ever need"
There will never be a greater gateway thrash album than Rust In Peace

First venture into stoner metal. Actually no, my very first go with stoner metal was Age Of Winters, by The Sword. But it wasn't until I heard NOLA that I was encouraged to start looking further into the genre, as well as closely related genres like sludge and doom. Now stoner/doom/sludge metal has likely become my favorite music. And... not really any albums in particular, but the first rock/metal artist (hell, maybe even the first musical artist in general) I ever really got into (got lots of their albums and went to see them live and stuff) was Buckethead. Well uh, this is the first album I got by him, and actually the first hard copy of an album I ever really got by my own accord after really starting to get interested in music.

Also my favorite death metal album of all time.
