Im into Longboarding and all that jazz, im into art and all that jazz, i got this rad longboard the other day: Probably the first thing that you have noticed is that it is all wood, and you dont need to be a longboarder to understand that a longboard simply isnt a longboard if it doesnt have its own unique graphic on the back. Now, im a little short on ideas, the main problem is that it will be hard to get the actual painting(or whatever) onto the piece of bamboo. I was thinking about something asian like this: Now not this exactly, it really needs to be more vertical than horizontal, i also very much want that asian mumbo-jumbo writing, but again vertical would be nice. this also a problem because 1. its gonna be a BITCH to get this on the board and stay on. 2. its waayy too detailed which makes it even harder to draw My friends suggested that i just go with simple shapes, but im open to suggestions, what do ya got?
Stencils. Cut them out of Con-Tact Paper and spray paint them. You can do multiple levels and it sticks to the board. [editline]time[/editline] Kinda like this... Kinda...
If you're new to this, I agree with your friend. You should go with simple shapes. Although, there's this one technique that apparently works pretty well when you're spray painting. Try pouring dish soap (any kind, eg. Dawn) on the areas of the board that you don't want any colour getting on. So just look at the photo reference, and use the soap to fill in the white/blank areas, and spray black/gray/whatever you want. After everything is dried, scrub the soap off (gently, of course). Hopefully that made some sort of sense.
You should think about transferring the picture on instead, it's actually really easy.
try something with a japanese calligraphic-brush style? it still fits the theme, and can be quite simple, even the picture you posted has big obvious brush strokes, when you break it down its not at all complicated. the hard part will be not fucking it up when youre painting the board. practice beforehand, pencil something onto the board so youre not just winging it might seem daunting, but it would be so cool if the design and painting was done by you, rather than some printed out transferred bit of art you found on the internet. in terms of getting it to stay on, clear coat spray?
have you drawn before? It pretty much depends on your skills with the brush. And if you want to draw something that detailed, that style takes years of practice to perfect On the other hand, a wooden board is pretty cool too in its own way
well i could make a simpler image than the one i showed, i really just relied on what i could find with google images, acouple friends suggested that i should just leave it, but i figured it would still be too bland, even with a logo or 2 wouldnt be enough
buy a caligraphy brush and black ink, or black watercolor paint. but i dont think you will be able to get the range of contrast if you paint it directly on the board. i think the only way to get this to work would be to print it and transfer it on the board.
Either do the transfer thing the dude above posted, or call a friend to help you. You have to know some artistic people.
