President Barack Obama shared his thoughts on a set of complex issues on Friday, weighing in on Trayvon Martin's death, the recent acquittal of George Zimmerman and the nation's broader history of race and racial bias.
SOURCE: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/07/19/white-men-racism-over_n_3624866.html
oh no Obama really shouldn't have commented on the case in the first place.
Well, they're right though. Racism clearly had nothing to do with the case.
I don't think the Zimmerman case in particular was really about race, and I find Obama's attempts to keep race in the discussion are misguided. That said, African-American's (and to be fair Hispanics as well) do face a racially unbalanced legal system and it's important to talk about that but I think people have picked the wrong battle to win the war on that front. Also those tweets are funny. I'm pretty sure "racism is dead because we have a black president" is a trope at this point :v:
Honestly, it just seems like Obama's trying to shift attention away from the NSA thing and drum up public support for him by reminding people that he's black.
That's exactly whats going on.
Its only racist if you make it so.
Huffington Post has to be just about the worse piece of media on the whole Zimmerman crap.
Honestly, it just seems like Obama's trying to shift attention away from the NSA thing and drum up public support for him by reminding people that he's black.
I can forgive the former as the game of politics but the latter is less him talking to the general populace and more to leaders in the black community who feel like Obama hasn't done enough to equalize the races, which is a more than reasonable line of reasoning when you discover that Obama's War on Drugs with it's demonstrably racially-imbalanced conviction rate has cracked down on offenses more often and harder than Bush's. [editline]22nd July 2013[/editline]
Not like it matters anyway. I think the majority of the American populace has shown that they really don't give a shit about the NSA.
Evidence: The number of Americans posting from their air-conditioned room on Facepunch about how lazy Americans are.
I thought it was for skittles?
I think it's pretty obvious Obama knew he would end up saying something stupid during this whole Zimmerman thing, and had this NSA thing "leaked" out so people wouldn't talk about it.
As much as I hate to admit it some of those rich white conservatives are actually right. Race shouldn't be a big factor when looking at this specific case especially from a legal standpoint. The real issue here is why the police just let Zimmerman go after simply taking his word for it that he was attacked and "standing his ground".
The real issue here is why the police just let Zimmerman go after simply taking his word for it that he was attacked and "standing his ground".
I have a hard time suspecting anything other than racism. I also suspect race was a motivating factor for why Zimmerman was concerned about Martin's presence in the first place.
I have a hard time suspecting anything other than racism. I also suspect race was a motivating factor for why Zimmerman was concerned about Martin's presence in the first place.
Right that's why Zimmerman stood up to the police against hate crimes in the Sherman Ware case, and that's why in the 911 call where Zimmerman was reporting suspicious activity he did not once refer to the race of Trayvon Martin until explicitly asked to which he only responded "he looks black". Honestly now there was a teenager in a hoodie walking around a neighbourhood in the rain peering into windows how is that not god damn suspicious. He was just doing his job as a neighbourhood watch captain, race had nothing to do with it
-woops wrong thread-
oh no Obama really shouldn't have commented on the case in the first place.
He really shouldn't have. He had no business in doing it, and before the case even started he was on Trayvon's side, and even now after the trial and verdict he's still on his side. The little thug picked the wrong person to start beating. Is Obama going to comment on every crime now? He's going to be very busy
Honestly, it just seems like Obama's trying to shift attention away from the NSA thing and drum up public support for him by reminding people that he's black.
Yeah, gotta drum up support for his re-election, right? Oh wait. No, maybe he's just an idiot as opposed to a conspiratorial idiot?
I also suspect race was a motivating factor for why Zimmerman was concerned about Martin's presence in the first place.
We can never know if it was. We know that he confronted a person he deemed suspicious and shot the person after he was probably being beat up by that person.
I'm not overly familiar with the case, did Zimmerman have any other way to defend himself? Regardless of everyone's race it still seems like a disproportionate response for someone who should have been trained for this shit right?
disproportionate response for someone who should have been trained for this shit right?
What kind of training does a neighbourhood watchman need? An athletic 17 year old beating up a chubby 20 something year old doesn't seem impossible to me.

Regardless of everyone's race it still seems like a disproportionate response for someone who should have been trained for this shit right?
according to testimonies and evidence, zimmypants got decked in the face by tboy on the way back to his car, zimmbo fell backwards onto the sidewalk and tboy straddled him, and proceeded to beat his head into the concrete. zimms tried to scoot towards the grass, revealing his firearm, tboy said "you're gonna die tonight motherfucker" and reached for it. zimmboni grabbed it first and fired.
Yeah, gotta drum up support for his re-election, right? Oh wait. No, maybe he's just an idiot as opposed to a conspiratorial idiot?
I'm not saying there's a conspiracy or anything, I'm just saying that lately his reputation has been in the toilet and he learned from the election that being black and talking race was a pretty good and easy way to boost his approval. Even if he can't be elected president again, men like him are all about their reputation and the public opinion of them.
I have a hard time suspecting anything other than racism. I also suspect race was a motivating factor for why Zimmerman was concerned about Martin's presence in the first place.
Stop injecting racism into everything just because it "makes sense", when Zimmerman has a history of standing up against hate crimes. Obama needs to shut it too because Zimm bloody voted for him.
Damn I feel dumb for commenting shit I have no clue about.
Now it is not racism that's true, it was tho. Now it's about the government trying to maintain control over their dumb actions and not get tossed by their own people, they are scared of the people. Just my 2 cents.
No, they're genuinely not scared of the people. The overwhelming majority of the populace doesn't give a shit about the NSA and Prism or anything like that. Its an incredibly tiny minority that cares at all, and an even smaller minority that actually has strong feelings about it.

Government gives a shit about the only thing they have, control over the people. In any case they do not want to lose this control by doing what the people want them to do.
