Largest Civil Disobedience In Walmart History Leads To More Than 50 Arrests
Surrounded by about 100 police officers in riot gear and a helicopter circling above, more than 50 Walmart workers and supporters were arrested in downtown Los Angeles Thursday night as they sat in the street protesting what they called the retailer's "poverty wages."
Organizers said it was the largest single act of civil disobedience in Walmart's 50-year history. The 54 arrestees, with about 500 protesting Walmart workers, clergy and supporters, demonstrated outside LA's Chinatown Walmart. Those who refused police orders to clear the street after their permit expired were arrested without incident. Those who fail to post $5,000 bail would be jailed overnight, Detective Gus Villanueva, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman, told The Huffington Post.
Their primary demand to Walmart: pay every full-time worker at least $25,000 a year.
One of the protesting Walmart workers, Anthony Goytia, a 31-year-old father of two, said he believes he will make about $12,000 this year. It's a daily struggle, he said, "to make sure my family doesn't go hungry."
"The power went out at my house yesterday because I couldn't afford the bill," Goytia told HuffPost. "I had to run around and get two payday loans to pay for my rent from the first" of the month. "Yesterday we went to a food bank."
To make ends meet, Goytia said he sometimes participates in clinical trials and sells his blood plasma. He has been asking his managers for full-time employment for a year and a half. Instead, he said, they hire temporary workers, who can be fired at any time.

I used to work at Wal-Mart the place is a dirty shithole in the parts you don't shop in. Fuck that place so hard.
tickle down, bootstraps, layabouts etc
tickle down, bootstraps, layabouts etc
Tickle down? I'm curious how this might work.
Just so that no one is confused, they were not arrested for actually protesting Walmart. They were arrested because they stayed there after their permit had expired. Those arrested were kept only overnight.

I am glad the public order has been restored and these lazy parasites have been purged off the street.
This calls for celebration with champagne that costs more than the monthly wages of all of them added up, maybe some caviar. Just give me a second to snuff cocaine laced with rhino horn and order the private jet to get ready for pointless loitering above the city.

President Elmo is very adamant about his Tickle Down policies

I feel like this should be put into the OP to avoid pages of shit posts because people enjoy reading the first few lines of a thread and begin the bitch fest.
There really need to be laws regulating the amount of part time employees you can hire.
Wal-Mart is a fucking cesspool.
I used to do shoplift prevention, I got fired because I confronted a dude who was wearing a gigantic trenchcoat and fedora (I wish I was kidding) and was shoving toys into the inner pockets of his coat, he also had a backpack filled with games from the $1 bin.
They fired me for "unprofessional conduct" after I tackled the dude. He spit in my face and tried to run out of the store with a trench coat literally full of random toys (yes, MLP shit included) and crappy Xbox games, did not get very far.
Wal-Mart is fucking disgusting, I agree. Do not shop there unless you have to.
How the fuck do they expect a father of two to support his family on 1000 dollars a month?
How the fuck do they expect a father of two to support his family on 1000 dollars a month?
You really think they care?
I must be the only one who looks for a new job if I cannot make enough to support my family at the current one, or am looking for fulltime employment.
Like if walmart was really that bad, go look for fulltime jobs instead of applying for protest permits.

They probably intentionally did that to bring more media attention to the event. Good on them.

I've heard about this before. The economic downturn allowed Walmart to shift to temporary jobs which gives them a reliable workforce without having to worry about troublesome living wages, benefits, or workers rights. Absolutely terrible.
Clearly these lazy parasites haven't seen that Penn and Teller video about the Libertarian utopia Walmart has provided them.
They just hope to get people like me, teenagers living with their parents with very few bills who go "HELL YEAH!! $625 every two weeks I'm fucking rich!!" to run their store. I get treated a million times better at the ice cream factory, I used to be a cashier at Wal-Mart which was alright, until they moved me to unloading trucks which was very hard labor and I was constantly sweating for minimum wage. I quit and didn't look back. The ice cream factory I'm at pays like $4.50 per hour higher than wal-mart and I'm working just about the same as if I stayed unloading those fucking trucks.
Fun Fact: In my small town roughly $500,000 of merchandise was stolen every year from that wal-mart, most of it is cosmetics.
One time I saw a guy (who threatened me before) stealing two pairs of beats, I called for Asset Protection (shoplifting who are trained because as a cashier you're not allowed to do shit.) Asset Protection literally did nothing and I looked like an idiot calling on the phone for them for over 45 minutes. Their policies are set up in favor of shop lifters, it's fucking stupid.

They set "equal" wages just based on labor.
No amount of money is earned in regards to how many children you have, only some minor tax breaks.

You think these people have a jobs tree growing in their back garden?

I mean it's all pretty much legal and nothing weird happened, but to me it seems to defeat the point when civil disobedience and protests / gatherings are illegal unless carefully planned so as to not actually inconvenience the people they're protesting. Kinda creepy tbh.

Your anecdote is garbage and unrelated. Any fool with half a brain knows you cant physically touch anyone in the store, loss prevention or not. Even MLP guy knew that so dont blame walmart for YOUR incompetence. That being said if you want a job that pays more than minimum wage you shouldn't have a minimum wage job.
I dont expect to make 10 bucks an hour baggin groceries just because I cant live on 7.25. If you're raising two kids you probably shouldn't be working at wal-mart and expecting to be well off. Or atleast JUST at wal-mart.

lmao
never said I wasn't paid enough and definitely did not blame wal-mart for my incompetence
and actually you're very much allowed to physically contact someone if they're not in the store, thanks
anything else you wanted to spew all over the internet or are we done here

Relative to Sweden, cheap as fuuuck.

I used to work in ASDA which is the walmart owned UK supermarket chain, you get paid about right for the work you do. It's an easy job. Anyone expecting 25k a year to work in a supermarket without being at manager level is just being plain ridiculous.

yeah, mostly what happens are these hambeast motherfuckers on their mobility scooters realize they don't need 5 packs of cream cheese and abandon one in whatever aisle they're in rather than just putting it back, you'd be surprised. we had one lady legitimately start eating a block of cream cheese while driving around on a mobility scooter then just left it in the toy aisle
people of wal-mart are just scum, nuke all wal-marts

yeah i never understood why people expect wal-mart to pay well.

The paid enough thing wasn't directed at you it was directed at the news article. And every store where I live you are not allowed to touch anyone no matter what. Loss prevention is simply walking up to people stealing and staring them down until they leave. You cannot lay a finger on them at all, and when they leave the store they are gone and all you can do is call the cops.
Your anecdote being sandwiched between 'Wal-Mart is a cesspool' and 'Wal-Mart is fucking disgusting' had me thinking that your story was the reasoning behind you thinking that, where as from what I know your conduct was actually very unprofessional and it's kind of no brainer that you got fired for it.
But that is just bad reading comprehension on my part. Now im done spewing all over the internet, and we are done here.

Because that totally works, right? It's completely impossible that they have been looking for months and yet cannot find anythign else, no?
Get real. Jobs don't grow on trees. None of these people would be there if they had a choice. But they don't. It's either "Work at walmart" or "Don't work", because there's nothing else that will hire them for whatever reason.
I used to work in ASDA which is the walmart owned UK supermarket chain, you get paid about right for the work you do. It's an easy job. Anyone expecting 25k a year to work in a supermarket without being at manager level is just being plain ridiculous.
There's a difference between "Pays well" and "Doesn't even pay enough to keep the rent up."
Walmart is in the latter category. They pay part time wages for full time work, and the part timers barely make enough money to afford the fuel bill to go to work at all. 'Tis why I refuse to apply there despite my parents trying to get me to, I know damn well I'll lose money on fuel bills.
yeah, mostly what happens are these hambeast motherfuckers on their mobility scooters realize they don't need 5 packs of cream cheese and abandon one in whatever aisle they're in rather than just putting it back, you'd be surprised.
'Tis not just the hambeast motherfuckers. There's plenty of thin asshats who do that as well. Assholes come in all shapes and sizes, after all.

looooool, let's generalize because that always works! :downs:
