We all know Baby is a new born child. But I was also wondering, why people call ,for example, hot girls "Baby"?
Like in porn movies:""Oh yeah baby, come on..."
or in eurovision song:"Stay forever and ever and you will always be my baby"
or even Justin Bieber's Baby.
I find it weird for people to call adults Baby.
Or am I missing a part of English language?
It's just also used as slang in modern western culture and stuff, signifying a significant other or someone you might care for
snip
At a guess, a baby is a small, innocent, cute (to some) thing. I guess it used to be an endearing and friendly pet term that was distorted and generalised. I don't really have an english degree or whatever so that might not be the case.
It's a saying, like ass. An ass is a donkey, but it has a different meaning. Just like schwanz in German. It literally means 'tail' but it's slurred into 'dick.'
because theyre cute!!!!!!

and ass because asses stop in the middle of the way and be annoying, they refuse to move sometimes when they're packed with stuff. that's true.
I wondered this when I was younger and listening to S Club 7.
I use "Baby," "Kitten," "Babe," etc when in a relationship. I'm note entirely sure why either, it's just a term of affection.
Probably the same reason terms like "kitten", "doll", "pet" are used.
I never use "Baby" in that context. It sounds too awkward.
Babe sounds better.

But I don't use either.

Well, if you call your girlfriend a kitten, you understand it's meaning. But BABY?
baby baby oOoooOh
I never use "Baby" in that context. It sounds too awkward.
yeah it usually is when you dont have a girlfriend

Kitten?
My ex hates being called baby... I quickly learned not to call her that. Ow.
What I don't get is why "honey"?
Think about it. Sure, honey is sweet, but how many people actually have honey in their home? How many, when looking for a snack, go for something with honey? I bet more people like, have, and use coffee than honey(here in the US), but no one calls their gf or bf "coffee".
"Sugar" makes more sense since everyone loves sugar, but it sounds cheesy to me.
I like sweetie or sweetheart better. But baby isn't bad either.
Personally I'd just call her darling or something like that. I admit saying "baby" sounds odd.
Just use "sweetie" or "hun."
just because
no real reason
Just use "sweetie" or "hun."
It feels wrong to call your gf "hun" unless you're married.
I've used everything from hun, hunni, baby, babe, muffin, goose, cutie, sweetie, sweetheart, cupcake, sweetcheeks, beautiful, and sexy for pet names. Just really depends on the timing of what you're saying and talking about.

Yeah baby!
But yeah I never say it, and I've never seen anyone else say it outside of movies/music.

Depends how long you've been together. Sounds fine for me.

I guess your friend is similar to her dad.
