A soldier stationed at Fort Campbell risked his life to save a woman who intentionally drove her car into the Cumberland River.
The incident happened at about 11:15 p.m. Friday at McGregor Park in Clarksville.
Police said Jose Ortiz and his girlfriend, Kathy DeWitt, were sitting along the boat ramp when they saw a woman drive her car into the river. According to police, Ortiz dove into the water while his girlfriend called 911.
"There was a lot of screaming, and I just thought whoever was in the vehicle was trying to keep him in the water," said DeWitt.
Ortiz told police that the 58-year-old victim tried to fight him off but he was eventually able to get her out of the car to safety.
"She didn't want to open the door. She looked and me and said, 'Leave me alone, leave me alone, I want to die,'" said Ortiz. "I said to her, 'You won't die tonight, not tonight.'"
Fighting darkness and the current, Ortiz didn't give up and eventually pulled the woman to safety.
“I just grabbed her leg, pulled her from the leg. She got stuck in the head with the seat belt. I followed the body and I felt the seat belt and took it off,” said Ortiz.
Paramedics took the rescued woman to Gateway Hospital in Clarksville. Ortiz said he would like to meet her again. His army supervisor told police that they plan to recognize Ortiz's efforts with a medal.
Ortiz and his girlfriend were at the park spending time together because Friday was his last day of leave before returning to duty with the 63rd Chemical Company at Fort Campbell.
"He did a great job without hesitation, and I'm very proud of him," said DeWitt
Damn people saving lives without properly asking if they were planning on dieing.
:crossarms: Killing yourself is not a good idea. Wether there is a deity or not you are playing a game of risk.

If you should stop people from committing suicide is something completely else of course.

suicide has nothing to do with deities
it has to do with friends/family and how a loved one committing suicide affects them for the rest of their lives. the people still alive are the victims.
You do raise a good point.

yeah, how dare he rescue someone else
Didn't a guy save someone from committing suicide and ended up getting sued?
[editline]05:48PM[/editline]
nvm, that was The Incredibles :v:
How awesome would it be if that guy dove into the water, heard the woman say that she wanted to die, and then the guy would just go back.
"What, did you rescue her!?"
-"Nah, she wanted to die"
Something tells me the woman is going to sue his ass for saving her.
Christianity fixed it by saying "Kil urself and u go 2 hel lol"
Don't even try to start a religion shitstorm.
So they talked under water?
what a dumb way to kill yourself

Reminds me of The Incredibles.
Wow, he was brave for diving in after her, but what a cuntish move, she told him she wanted to die, he should have just swum back up and been all like, "Ain't my problem."

Yeah, I imagine the conversation would have went something like,
"Blub blub blub blub?"
"Blub blub blub!"
"Blub..."

He mentioned he could hear her saying she wanted to die, it's not exactly his fault though, he was probably running on adrenaline at that point. But still, he just fucked up her life by saving her.

Lots of people who fail at suicides end up moving on and living happy lives, and often had some sort of mental illness.
So they talked under water?
She was in the car, it wasn't completely filled with water yet.
At least he saved her.. I'm glad it wasn't any worse.
yeah, how dare he rescue someone else
Rescue? What? She wanted to die, now she's probably going to be put in a hospital and sedated for the rest of her life. That seems like a really shit fate to me. The fact that the soldier knew that she wanted to die just made it even worse.
Its a car, not a boat.
