[quote]Wes Craven, the famed writer-director known for the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movies, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.
Craven, whose iconic Freddy Krueger character horrified viewers, died at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced.
Craven claimed to have gotten the idea for Elm Street when living next to a cemetery on a street of that name when growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. His five Nightmare on Elm Street films were released from 1984-89.
Similarly, Craven's Scream series was a box-office sensation. In those scare-'em-ups, he spoofed the teen horror genre. The movies frequently referenced other horror movies.

Nightmare on Elm Street is my favorite horror series of all time, this sucks, glad he gave us a lot of great entertainment, pretty much defined campy teen horror flicks.
If anyone's interested, I strongly urge you to check out NoES 1 & 3: Dream Warriors. Nightmare on Elm Street 1 is your standard, set in stone Elm street movie, slasher flick but the twist is that the deaths are fucking cool. The third movie in the series has the protagonists fight back against Freddy within the dreams and creates for some awesome practical effects sequences, it's also the turning point in the series where Freddy's at his most comical. There's also the New Nightmare which has a really cool concept in my opinion, Wes Craven and the actors of the original Nightmare on Elm Street Series (mainly heather) actually become haunted by the 'real' Freddie Kreuger 10 years after filming the first movie.
Rest in Peace Craven, guy was an absolute genius.
I was never big into the Nightmare on Elm Street series, but I fucking loved the Scream movies. RIP :C
Rest in Peace
loved The People Under the Stairs and Scream
Was never huge into horror films but i absolutely respect the man and his works. R.I.P in pace.
Damn, I loved the Nightmare on Elm series, sucks to hear that he's gone now.
Apart from Scream, New Nightmare and Red Eye, I wasn't a big fan of his movies, but it's still a bummer to see him go. The horror genre has lost an icon.
Rest in peace Craven. He left his mark on the world and will always be remembered for the screams and laughs he created.
Knowing he was about to die after a long career of killing his characters must have made it that much worse for him. :saddowns:
Never knew he had brain cancer. That sucks. RIP
The source is wrong, Wes Craven's New Nightmare came out in 1994.
Also RIP; I grew up watching horror movies and the Nightmare on Elm Street movies are pretty nostalgic to me.

I'd watch all of them. Except for the remake. Even though they decline in quality, it's still a fun ride.
RIP Wes Craven, may you have more peace in death than Freddy ever had.
Scream was one of my first horror movies, sad to see him pass on.
I wake up and this is the first news item I read? Goddammit!
Really gutted about this, was planning on going through my Nightmare on Elm Street boxset again for Halloween so I guess I will do now.
Jesus christ, Craven is one of my favorite directors.
So did Freddy get him?
horror genre hasn't outdone he the giant he became.

Yeah. It's terrible he had to go so soon, I wes craven for more of his stuff
While Carpenter and Halloween were my big hooks into horror, Craven was probably the most well-known director name I knew and one of the most highly respected individuals in personal cinematography that I can think of. I'm pretty hurt by this.
I was just watching Nightmare On Elm Street last night. The original. We'd watched a shitty B-movie for giggles and then decided we had to watch something done right, and put on the original. Neither of us had any idea that the man had passed away only hours prior. Jeez.
