To get past the limitations of ordinary facial matching software, Facebook’s researchers have managed to find a way to build 3D models of faces from a photo, which can then be rotated to provide matching of the same face captured at different angles. In the past, facial recognition via computer could be pretty easily foiled if a subject is simply tilting their head in a slightly different direction. The Facebook DeepFace algorithm needs to be trained on an extensive pool of faces to be able to perform its magic, but it can identify up to 4,000 identities based on a database of over 4 million separate images in its current version. Theoretically, that could be expanded to cover a much larger swatch with further work, and then be applied to Facebook’s social network itself, which would be very useful if Facebook wanted to automate the process of identifying all your contacts, and performing analytical magic like determining who you’re photographed most frequently with, without the use of manual tagging.
I'd love to see the mathematics behind this. Alas, they will probably never reveal it.
us government buys this technology when
time to get the fuck out of from facebook
--snip-- I find technology like this really scary and unnecessary
And this is why I'm thinking of buying some high power UV led's. It fucks with the cameras making it almost impossible to recognize your face. I find technology like this really scary and unnecessary
What are you going to do? Strap high power UV LEDs to your glasses?
What are you going to do? Strap high power UV LEDs to your glasses?
Of course, you can do this. [t]http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/aMimeO279YE/maxresdefault.jpg[/t] won't be able to see much though.

Does this mean facebook is shifting toward more r&d stuff rather than social/advertising stuff?
that fucking picture of stallone
NSA can't catch you when you're walking around glowing.
Jokes on the NSA, I'm going to get skin cancer!
what's scary is that facebook as been at least accurate 80% of the time suggesting the correct person to tag. THEY REMEMBER FACES
They are going to release a paper, so it's possible to see how they are doing it.
all this to get tagged in photos
not the exact same but still quite similar can see this being right up the NSA's / GCHQ's street.
Okay really guys? This is some scary shit.
If they start a project on voice recognition will it be called DeepThroat?
Okay really guys? This is some scary shit.
It's obvious that the future is a cyberpunk dystopia
Okay really guys? This is some scary shit.
Face recognition is scary shit?
Of course, you can do this. [t]http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/aMimeO279YE/maxresdefault.jpg[/t] won't be able to see much though.
Obligatory: [t]http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/633/745/b80.jpg[/t] Also I can see Facebook making a pretty buck off of this. Sell the software/algorithms/what have you to others that might need it (e.g. camera manufacturers who want the feature).
I like how they used Stallone's face as if they're saying: "Look guys, it can even recognise THIS face!"
