This happened about 40 minutes ago. Learned about it from NHK World News, looking for more sources.
Posted: Jul 11, 2014 3:50 PM ET Last Updated: Jul 11, 2014 3:50 PM A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has hit Japan's northern coast near the nuclear power plant crippled in the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake struck early Saturday 10 kilometres below the sea surface off the coast of Fukushima, northeast of Tokyo. The agency issued tsunami advisory along the Japanese northern coast. Public broadcaster NHK says the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is checking if there is any damage from the quake. The 2011 disaster killed about 19,000 people. That disaster also triggered multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima plant. More than 100,000 people are still unable to go home due to fear of radiation contamination from the plant.
Source: http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/japan-earthquake-of-6-8-magnitude-triggers-tsunami-advisory-1.2704547
Ordinarily the Japanese are kind of used to quakes, as the whole island sits on the Ring of Fire, but I bet this one's traumatized some Fukushima-area residents. I hope it turns out well.
Aw shit not again. Lets hope it'll stay at just an earthquake.
All the while this is happening: rip japan

How affected are the inland areas of the country when these things happen?
How affected are the inland areas of the country when these things happen?
Depends how large the tsunami is. if you live on a hill you'll be ok
God has had enough of anime.

Great.....now MGS V will be delayed even longer.
It's been over six hours and nothing has happened. Pretty safe to say nothing serious happened.
Okay, the last big earthquake was on March 11, 2011. Now there's another on July 11, 2014. 9/11 was also on the 11th. IT'S A CONSPIRACY WAKE UP SHEEPLE [sp]that's a joke if you don't get it[/sp]
ugh earthquakes, nature could be a bit more creative with these disasters. when's the skyscraper-sized lizard going to emerge?
For future reference the USGS PAGER service is a magnificent piece of work: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/usb000rs50#pager
holy shit, they just cant get a break can they?
holy shit, they just cant get a break can they?
And on a beautiful country to boot...
holy shit, they just cant get a break can they?
they haven't had a break for thousands of years why would they suddenly get a break now
It's easy to see why their ancestors probably genuinely believed that the Earth itself was out to kill them. Probably had a major influence on their religious practices centuries ago.
In ancient China they actually attributed natural disasters to divine signs of disapproval towards the reigning Emperor. Wonder if the Janapese believed anything of the sorts. Would be a bad place to be his Imperial Majesty then.
they haven't had a break for thousands of years why would they suddenly get a break now
I don't like how in these threads everyone has this "Poor Japan :( poor thing" mentality.
why?
