Is a gp-5 sufficient for dust, abstebtos, and such with a nato 40mm filter?
Yeah, GP-5s work fine.
A gas mask? shit dude, you preparing for World War 3? :v:
A gas mask? shit dude, you preparing for World War 3? :v:
Rofl I wouldn't get a gp-5 for WWIII, and all I haz is a machete and a .22, if SHTF. D: but yeah the filter is from 1979, should it work? Sorry I forgot to mention that...

It's better to spend a few bucks on a new filter than it is to get lungfuls of asbestos if you're intent on using that mask.

[editline]27th October 2012[/editline] so will it be safe, I've heard it is, it's from 1979, if that makes a difference, I can't hear shaking in it, so it's probably not activated, either, it's the regular gp-5 filter, too.
RIP Bazz, We hardly knew ye...
You can get nice, reusable, half face respirators that can use multiple types of cartridges for like 15 bucks, and particulate cartridges for about 5-6 bucks. http://www.esafetysupplies.com/3M-Half-Facepiece-6000-Series-Reusable.html http://www.esafetysupplies.com/3M-2200-Series-Advanced-Particulate-Filters-Particulate-Filter.html Plus if you really want to get hardcore they make all kinds of different filters that will fit on that mask, like Ammonia/Methylamine gas filters. Buying some old shitty GP-5 will likely do more harm than good. A lot of those filters contain asbestos, plus they are likely expired. Not to mention how MASSIVELY unergonomic and uncomfortable a GP-5 is.
For dust/pollen a GP-5 is sufficient with original filter for a couple of days. Wouldn't use it for any actually harmful substance. Thought asbestos hadn't been used in filters since pre/during WW2?
asbestos

DUHUHUHU ASSBESTUS
Mind you that only the filters from WWII contained asbestos and really anything after that contains some form of carbon.
RIP Bazz, We hardly knew ye...
I tested it, asked a person who knew about gas masks, had a collection, and have been using the filter, I'm fine.
Mind you that only the filters from WWII contained asbestos and really anything after that contains some form of carbon.
Activated carbon can still fuck you up if you are using expired canisters milsurp canisters are pretty much never a good idea to use. Even if you filter the incoming air, you are going to be breathing in the shit from the expired filter, which can be just as unhealthy depending on how old it is. Hell, if you are just trying to filter dust, a damn dust mask will do just as well and wont make you look like a BSDM pornstar like a GP5 http://www.harborfreight.com/garage-shop/masks-respirators/particulate-respirator-with-valve-47518.html
I wouldn't mess with old filters just to be on the safe side. They sell exact replicas manufactured within the last few years for just a few bucks online. No one will know the difference.
Using a GP-5 for any purpose in 2012 is a terrible idea. If you don't need actual chemical protection, a respirator from Home Depot will do the job without terribly obstructing your vision and ability to breathe. If you do need more protection than a respirator provides, your GP-5 is completely useless anyways and it's time to invest in a gas mask that wasn't terrible even when it was brand new. Of course, if you're going anywhere that actually requires a gas mask, you are making a mistake to begin with and should re-think your choices. Your filter is expired and therefore completely useless, and if the mask is as old as the filter then the latex has certainly degraded sufficiently to compromise its protective abilities. Buy a respirator. It will run you $15 at most.
I strongly suggest using respirators instead. Also, if you run into anyone while wearing a GP-5 they will think that you are a terrorist.
I strongly suggest using respirators instead.
Exactly. Proper equipment for the right job. I'd only wear this masks as a costume, never for an actual safety purpose.
Alright, thanks guys, I'm still using it as a costume, threw out the filter, but I'll use a respirator a newer (better) gas mask with NATO filters from this year or two years ago if I do need to actually need a respirator or gas mask.

got one of these as well as the eye glass inserts. Thank you USAF.
[t]http://latex101.com/shop/images/uploads/finnish.jpg[/t] Is it this?
Yep, I got 2 filters for it and for some strange reason there was a blood stain on the mask. :tinfoil:
Yeah you wear that and get caught snooping around somewhere you're gonna get shot.
lol, nope, I cut myself on the filter's metal edges when I was trying to take it off. :v:

The GP-5 is also made of Silicone, not Latex. As far as needing a mask, even if he had the newest production mask such as the M50 Avon, if he was in the vicinity of TIC-TIM (Toxic Industrial Chemicals/Toxic Industrial Materials) a standard CRBN filter would not cut it. He'd need a filter rated for TIC-TIM/HAZMAT. Battlefield chemical agents are in their most diluted state, but on an industrial level chemicals have been concentrated far beyond what is used in chemical warfare.
