• Dog Included on Menu for Chinese Space Mission

[release]According to the newly published autobiography of Yang Liwei, head of China's first manned space mission in 2003, the crew's meals included dog meat from Huajiang county, which is renowned for its health benefits. The meat is claimed to "cure high blood pressure, help build up old people's health, and reduce frequent urination," handy on a long voyage. In contrast, according to a Reuters article from last year, American space food runs to chicken with rice and macaroni and cheese, and Russians go for canned fish and borscht. The Japanese, of course, eat sushi. A Chinese space menu from 2009 includes Huajiang dog, as well as some rather more appealing fare. It certainly sounds tastier than what the Americans get, although the actual logistics of cooking complex dishes in space is not explained: Day One: Lotus root porridge, crispy tofu with spring onions, braised yellow croaker fish, pork ribs with seaweed, spinach with minced garlic. Day Two: Spicy pig skin, braised duck neck, hairy crab with ginger, chicken liver with chilli, pine nuts with sweetcorn, three-flavour soup. Day Three: Poached egg in fermented rice soup, Harbin sausage, Huajiang dog, baby cuttlefish casserole, eel with green pepper, spicy beans with dried tofu. Apples, pears and oranges served with every meal, as well as rice, noodles, sweet potatoes. Laika, the sole passenger of Sputnik 2 in 1957, was the first dog in space.[/release] http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-05/menu-chinese-space-mission-sounds-tasty-includes-dog I smell some puns around the corner.

The news barks about everything.
I don't see what the big deal is.
Dogs taste better than sheep.
Goddamn that menu sounds delicious.
I honestly don't have a problem with them eating dog, as long as its put down in a humane manner and has a dignified life, but what meat animals have that nowadays? Just because we aren't accustomed to eating dog, doesn't make it repulsive or something that only barbarians could possibly think of doing. :sax:

I have a dog. Now I'm sad :saddowns:
This is not news. Chinese people eat dog all the time.
Dog gone Chineses :bahgawd:
So? If that is what they eat let them eat it. Sure i don't like it, i love dogs but it is their culture. Just like we eat steak (from cows) and other countries wouldn't dare to hurt one simply because it sacred.
I hope those astronauts enjoy their space wok.

yes dog is so different from all other animals we eat
But I have a pet dog they can't do that they should have the same culture as me!
yes dog is so different from all other animals we eat
The problem with eating dogs is that they are widely valued for their companionship, and they are quite intelligent (compared to most animals) I don't know about you, but I can't look at pictures like this, this, and this and not feel disgust. I get the same sort of feeling when I see mutilated human corpses. Dogs aren't like cattle, pigs or chickens. Those can be packed up in trailers, sent into slaughterhouses and whatnot and the only emotion and interest they convey is "whatever." When you pack dogs up in cages, and they watch as the rest of the dogs around them get slaughtered, they are absolutely terrified. They are much more likely to misbehave and act out during their captivity, so I'm sure they go through a great deal of physical abuse and torture.
