Yeah a few months ago I saw a news thread about the release on the Spyder III 'claiming' to deliver 1 Watt of coherent energy (It's actually underspec ~800 mW)(plus a piece of crap)

When I did I took some interest and followed the site,

Started with looking at the various kits and moved on to the drivers and then figuring out how to solder the right settings, test load, looked up specs on different batteries and goggles.
Safety is very important
When I finally ordered I hit up a guy named Jayrob. bought it from him he was real nice and notified me of a backlog of 2-3 weeks, plenty of time to learn how to solder and learn much more.

From what I read, rushing in and building it could heave lead to disaster since the diodes are 50$ a piece and very sensitive, I was being very careful and bought/had all the tools I needed to help me, it was great to see it done.
specs A-140 445nm (on my camera it shows up as violet), ~1062mA's 'Hot option', Copper and aluminum heatsink, 18650 battery. Pretty much a Class 4 laser
it's cool as all hell.
I got some ants to burn.
The power of this thing at it's closest focal point can cut match sticks in half in seconds to blowing holes in thick plastic, lights matches instantly, and starts smoking things instantly

I don't see the use of them tbh, they're only good for when you get drunk and want to piss off police helicopters. And you'd have to be really bored to want to spend time in court.

I remembered playing with one a while ago. To be honest, I think 50% of the price went into the fancy case design.
A handheld 1W BR laser can be build for roughly $100 or less

It's not like they're going to be able to do anything with it. Soldering isn't exactly the easiest/quick thing to do, and most 12 year olds don't have the money/experience.

i have a cool green laser i use for light graffiti. its really awesome to try to outline furniture with it. makes a great shot.
and that's why i want to build one now. (not an extremely powerful one though. all that would do is burn walls)
