Post-metal is a genre of music that evolved from early sludge (the Melvins) and industrial metal (Godflesh) and has a bunch of influences ranging from atmospheric and drone music to hardcore punk to post-rock. The easiest way to think of it is an amalgamation of the gritty, distorted metal styles and the textural musical styles. The forerunners of the genre were Neurosis who with their 1996 release, Through Silver In Blood, which set the definitive post-metal sound: dark, encompassing atmosphere and heavy sludge. Post-metal is even called atmospheric sludge by critics of the term because of this common trend in the genre. However, it wasn't until 3 releases in the early 2000's that post-metal's capacity was fully realized. Isis' Oceanic, Cult Of Luna's Salvation and Pelican's Australasia paved the way for post-metal to evolve and become the eclectic genre it is today. Isis: Cult Of Luna: Pelican: The unique sound of post-metal is the drawn out, repetitive and simple riffing that causes massive build-ups into crushing climaxes. Many of the riffs are designed to evoke emotions and feelings and are either dense and packed with atmosphere or ambient, soothing passages reminiscent of post-rock. A signature aspect of the genre is the usage of vocals in relation to the rest of the metal umbrella, there are either zero vocals (Pelican, Russian Circles) and when there are vocals, they are usually shouted growls or barked. Anyway, here some examples of the genre: keep in mind here that the descriptions after them is what I think of them and not necessarily what you will think. Year Of No Light: Doom influenced post-metal Rosetta: Atmospheric Hardcore Sludge Jesu: Drone/Doom Post-Rock The Ocean (aka The Ocean Collective): Hardcore Sludge Isis: Sludge-Rock Russian Circles: Most people will disagree here, but I think they have so many properties of post-metal that they should be considered more post-metal than post-rock To sum it up, it's a pretty broad genre, with lots of influences, so take what you will from it and just enjoy the music mostly. Also if you ever hear someone class it as thinking mans metal, slap them in the balls because that's pretentious as fuck.
Ghosts of Glaciers - Local band. Awesome people. Omega Massif - Amazing post-metal band from Germany. Gold standard for post-metal imo. Listen to these next two songs in a row. They'll blow your fucking mind. Had no idea what the name was though.
Not so much atmospheric sludge, but I can only think to call these guys post-metal. They're more like post rock with heavier/metally sections. Definitely one of my favourite bands as well Sleepmakeswaves:
Ah yes, I bought Rosetta's "A Determinism of Morality" just based on the artwork. I definitely don't regret that purchase.
All of my favorites are covered in the OP, only thing I have to contribute is Time To Burn. Heavy as fuck sludgy post-metal. And I guess some of Maybeshewill's stuff has a metal edge to it. Not post-metal at all but I feel like this is relevant enough here. And I would definitely call Russian Circles post-metal over post-rock, if it makes any difference to you.

Makes them awesome to listen to.
Just as I begin getting into post-metal/drone metal, this thread comes up! Thank you for letting me know of a few more bands in this genre.
Nice thread Elu :tiphat: Not entirely sure but you could maybe put Baroness in there, definitely Sludge imo and I'm not 100% sure but I would definitely consider putting Morkobot in here too although they're weird as shit and can't really be pinned down easily as well as Ufomammut since they sort of border Doom/Sludge especially with their albums Eve and Idolum.
I would've point baroness in there, but I feel they're good ol' southern sludge instead of the atmospheric brand. Sludge and post-metal are just really easy to swap around and stuff. You play one, you dabble in the other more often than not.

um I'm pretty sure sludge =/= post-metal the bands in the OP are good and it's true that many post-metal bands are influenced by sludge but that alone does not qualify their music as sludge

The newest Ulcerate album can be counted as "post metal" and it's pretty damn awesome
Sludge and post-metal are just really easy to swap around and stuff. You didn't even post a vid of the pioneers either, what the hell is wrong with you?
uh doesn't sound like Eyehategod dabbles in post-metal
Did you read the post? "more often than not" I put atmospheric sludge in the title because there are lots of people who do not like the term post-metal, even some of the band IN the OP don't like the term. No-where did I say that all sludge bands where closely tied to post-metal and vice versa. ok sorry for misunderstanding I'll stop being a smartass now I recently noticed that the riff starting at 1:09 is nearly identical to this one(0:45):
Pelican's Australiasia is my favourite post-metal album, by far. You forgot Red Sparowes :).
Pelican's Australiasia is my favourite post-metal album, by far. You forgot Red Sparowes :).
I feel they sit on the post-rock side, but post your favourite songs.
Lapsus was definitely one of my favourite releases of last year.
Just found Cosmonauts Day, fucking excellent as shit!
Sounds a bit like an instrumental version of Wake/Lift era Rosetta but proggier. Either way this is really cool, apparently the album's free too: http://cosmonautsday.bandcamp.com/album/paths-of-the-restless
