Catholic leader says past molestation victims often seduced unwitting priests - Polidicks

The remarks were made to the National Catholic Register, a highly conservative publication, and have since been removed, but can be verified. Reverend Groeschel in his own words: [I]"Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster (aged) 14, 16, 18, is the seducer. On their [the child molesting priests] first offense, they should not go to jail because their intention was not committing a crime."[/I] Putting aside the reverend's need to rationalize the long documented history of priests abusing their power, it is disingenuous of him to say that an adult having sexual contact with a minor did not intend to commit a crime. It has been reported by The AP and their affiliates that the reverend, who has 37 years on the job, "deeply regrets" his comments. His full statement can be found where his interview was originally posted: [I]"I apologize for my comments. I did not intend to blame the victim. A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible. My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be. I have spent my life trying to help others the best that I could. I deeply regret any harm I have caused to anyone." [/I] Essentially Groeschel blames his placation of a plague of pedophile priests that have cost the church 100s of millions of dollars on having a senior moment. A similar statement was issued by the friars, laying the blame of the comments on Groeschel's age: About seven years ago, Fr. Benedict was struck by a car and was in a coma for over a month. In recent months his health, memory and cognitive ability have been failing. He has been in and out of the hospital. Due to his declining health and inability to care for himself, Fr. Benedict had moved to a location where he could rest and be relieved of his responsibilities. The statement implies that Groeschel's health was good enough that he was allowed to perform his duties, but once he attempted to white wash pedophile priests, that was the final straw. While an apology has been issued it certainly appears that the Catholic church, which desperately would like to give the appearance of reform and moving forward, still perpetuates a culture of cover-ups.
