The Olympic torch relay was disrupted by striking teachers after it entered Rio de Janeiro. Video footage of the demonstration suggests the flame was extinguished while the runner carrying the torch had to be bussed to safety.
The incident forced a temporary halt and prompted some runners to quit the relay. Protesters stoned cars and police responded with tear gas and pepper spray. To avoid further problems, a stretch of the relay was missed out.
A Rio 2016 spokesman, Philip Wilkinson, explained there is a back-up of eight lanterns. “The torch often goes out and is relit. The flame is never extinguished.”
The demonstration was staged by striking teachers, who are angry at not being paid for two months as a result of the near bankruptcy of the Rio state government.
Does that mean it's cancelled now?
The Olympics: Destroying communities one after another in the name of the sport/entertainment industry.
Has this happened before? To my knowledge it hasn't happened on purpose?

Happened a few times, back in 2013 even
In October 2013 in Russia, the Olympic flame was blown out at the Kremlin and was reignited from a security officer's lighter instead of the back up flame.
How many communities have been destroyed by the Olympics?
Does that mean it's cancelled now?
No.
Now we all die, since the flame has been extinguished.
Yes it gives life.
8 more to go lets get to work

Holy fuck why is this still going ahead. It's asked in every single one of these threads and it still needs to be asked.
What the hell is it going to take for this to stop? You can't just ignore your people and pretend that it'll all be fine. This is only going to get worse so why the fuck isn't anybody doing anything?
I guarantee that this will result in a large scale tragedy and I bet there will be officials saying "how could we have known, who could have saw this coming".

I wouldn't say destroyed per say, but it is important to note the severe economic impact that the olympics have on an area. One could say that it would be an economic boom as it attracts tourists and businesses to the area; however, the evidence to show that has been... lacking.
One article I could find on it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/10/magazine/does-hosting-the-olympics-actually-pay-off.html?_r=0
The main problems associated with it is that the local government is responsible for funneling massive funds into building up huge infrastructure projects to provide for the games, then once it is over, the stuff goes unused and falls apart. Additionally, the environmental impact of having a massive influx of people (and the waste they produce) is substantial.
Larger nations with sufficient budgets and well developed cities can most likely handle the stress of the games without a big deficit or destruction of its local economy, but poorer nations, or at the least poorer cities, probably won't fare so well, e.g Rio.
Damn, this is going to be a shitshow.

Brazil is in the top 10 of economies based on GDP.
It will be an anti climax when the headlines stop and the sport starts.
The Olympics: Destroying communities one after another in the name of the sport/entertainment industry.
Yeah, imagine if the Olympics were only hosted in countries and by contractors who actually make sure everything go as planned, and the local area is disrupted as little as possible.
So is the US but that wouldn't count for shit if they hosted the olympics in Detroit.
But wouldn't the financial brunt be shouldered by the country as a whole?

key word here being: trying
Is London going to be the last city not completely trashed by the Olympics?

The London Olympics broke even.

I'm dreading it in a way. If Brazil were kicking up that much of a shitstorm when they lost the football a few years back, imagine what would happen if the country doesn't finish in the lead after the olympic games. :v:

At this point, and I'm not hoping that it happens no wishing death on people here haha, it'd basically take an IOC official being attacked by an angry mob or assassinated for anyone in charge to care.
Is London going to be the last city not completely trashed by the Olympics?
Vancouver 2010 accelerated gentrification significantly; the place was already in a slow-burn real estate crisis and then we went ahead and won the fucking Olympic bid.
Vancouver hasn't been "completely trashed" but the short-term economic boost of the Olympics couldn't possibly cancel out the detrimental long-term effects it had.
Finally someone got through and managed to do it.

That video is just the icing on the cake of how shitty an idea it was to have the olympics hosted by Brazil.
The Olympics seems to destroy everything around it.
Why do we have them again?

Entertainment purposes.
It's like they watched me play Tropico after getting absolutely fucking lit on cheap booze and said, "yes, this is how we will run the country."
What a hilarious (and tragic) thing to read after waking up.
[editline]jesus christ i hate the radio people[/editline]
I can see some random thing come up like "oh hey striking teachers how do you handle this?" and I pick the "run the symbolic torch of this expensive event right through the crowd of angry people I neglected" option because I needed an excuse to slam back a shot.
I still have no idea how this hasn't been cancelled. Someone is going to die.
Has this happened before? To my knowledge it hasn't happened on purpose?
A fuckton of people tried to extinguish the torch back in the Beijing olympics, but I don't think anyone succeeded.
