1960s Presidential debate between JFK and Richard Nixon

Found this really refreshing to watch considering the modern political climate where identity politics on both sides of the disscusion seem to trump actual policy. Both parties have a civil and respectful debate.

To be absolutely fair, the only reason why this debate is reasonable is because this was before the 1968 Republican and Democratic convention when these two went on air and started basically abusing each other in front of American audiences which scored ABC a shit ton of ratings and set the gold standard for tv debates

There's a whole documentary on it, called "The Best of Enemies", it's a really fascinating doco and I highly recommend it

"I'll plaster you in the goddamn face, and you'll stay plastered."
This killed the election for Nixon because the lightning made him sweat, which made him look old and sickly

i can't believe we filmed the exact moment that things went so completely wrong.

Not just that, they both rejected the stations offer to professionally apply makeup (p. much all politicians wear makeup, even like bernie) but Kennedy's team was ready to do it for him, whereas Nixon had to send someone to the store to get makeup.
It was really cheap garbage that wasn't applied well, and didn't handle the sweat. Kennedy also basically looked like a Greek bronze statue from campaigning in the open sun, and Nixon's suit matched his dead skin.

Nowadays you watch this and you're like "I see the same shit on every facebook news article today what's new" but back then this was incredible television

not really, it was still just as much about identity to the average voter back then too
Man, I miss Nixon, he really was a great guy...

I mean I guess, comparatively to now
Man looking back (obvious observations), the US could've been much better off had JFK not been assassinated, we not have been force the ape that was LBJ and we didn't dick around and waste time and men in Vietnam.
Atleast back then the candidates gave more of a shit of their constituents than just scoring imaginary political brownie points.

LBJ hated the war, he wanted to be developing social projects here at home. Idiots just spout dumb bullshit about the guy because of the war without any understanding of what his actual goals and policies were.

I'd bet that Robert Kennedy's assassination was even more detrimental.
Damn JFK had a lot of difficulty getting satisfied
Guess that's where Marilyn Monroe came in
No idea why I watched this, I have no clue what they're talking about but it's interesting, I'm not very poilitical, even in my own country lol

Apparently JFK was well satisfied considering the amount of women he took in.

I think the most credible theory is that they made a deal with the mob in some capacity during the election, and as soon as JFK got in office they went and cracked down hard on the mob during their efforts to bring down crime. And well, you don't break a deal with the new york mob.
But frankly the kennedys pissed off so many people, they can all hide in plain sight since there's no sole obvious suspect. So there you go.
i've heard of the mafia thing but never knew they made an actual bargain with the mob, that is a pretty plausible theory for it

Considering how their dad made his money, it wasn't foreign territory.
