In an almost palpable irony, Russian and U.S. officials simultaneously announced their intent to move forward with controversial arms transfers to opposing sides in the Syrian civil war Monday.
If there were any doubts about the proxy nature of Syria for the two sides, the announcements should put them to bed.
Congressional hurdles have been lifted and weapons will soon flow into the hands of Syrian rebels, according to a Reuters report
"We believe we are in a position that the administration can move forward," House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers told Reuters Monday.
Half a world away, a representative of Syria's embattled President Bashar al Assad left a meeting with Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.
“All agreements between Russia and Syria in the area of arms deliveries are in place,” said Qadri Jamil on Monday. “The contracts continue and are in force.”
The representative of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad also asked Russia for a monetary loan, one that Moscow is still as of yet considering.
Meanwhile, the weapons Russia intends to deliver are of the S300 surface-to-air variety — which make enforcing a Western-backed no-fly zone all that much more dangerous, not to mention improbable.
The weapons transfers for the Americans have met resistance from within Washington political ranks. Vetting rebel groups in the middle of a civil war is a very difficult process.
"I think we also have to expect that some of the weapons we provide are going to get into the hands of those who would use them against us," Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told Reuters.

this can only end badly
Both sides are terrible at this moment, but I would really prefer Assad more. Yes, he may be nuthead but he's p much the only reason why minorities in Syria are still alive.

But he's responsible for nearly a hundred thousand deaths.

Is he now? What about the majority who is getting rounded up and killed by the cohesive minority? Are both sides shit? Kind of, not all the rebels can be painted with the same brush, but Assad can.
No doubt there's a political cartoon out there somewhere portraying Obama and Putin fighting each other while wearing masks of Syrian rebels and Assad.
It's like they're fighting each other indirectly.
Sounds like a proxy war.
I love proxy wars, these never go badly!

It's worse than that, its Sunni vs. Shiite jihad. Fucking religion, any side you support is intertwined with religion. Obama and Putin should unite to arm both sides of the rebels together, so they can wipe each other off the face of the planet.
yo dawg i support cold war II fuck those soviets and shit nigga
-sni-
Hey know whats fun, proxy wars
It's like they're fighting each other indirectly.
Its not just like that, that's exactly they're doing.
Cold War 2: Electric Boogaloo
Neither side gives a shit about the people of Syria, they just want to win. Cold war at its finest
So instead of trying to bring this conflict to a peaceful end because all people have a right to life and happiness, they just flood the war zone with weapons. Now you increased the killing capacity of either side the conflict will just ramp up into more blood shed.
So in America, some states increased gun control and there are some attempts to increase gun control nationally. Yet we are willing to arm foreigners (no background checks) and those weapons could end up in the hands of of terrorists or Assad.
I wish Superman was real because he would end the horror of war so easily and swiftly.
What do you say, Russia? One more proxy war for for old time's sake?
Whoever wins, Syria loses
It's not a proxy war if the two powers are in collusion
I prefer destroying current Syria, and settle the land with the nationless Assyrians

As an ethnic Assyrian, I find that to be the stupidest proposition for the situation. Displace tens of millions of people from their homes and put a diaspora of a few million (that's in the best case, more than likely not many from the diaspora would even want to come to the Middle East) in the place? Not to mention a lot of Assyrians consider the Mesopotamian region to be more fitting for a homeland, not the Levant. Also, the idea reeks of occupied Palestine and Israel to me.
Cool, but in ten years I expect "Full Metal Jihad" to be made.

I prefer the idea of letting them sort it out by themselves and not jumping into conflicts that don't concern us
Well this reminds me of certain cold war conflicts...
this sounds great for business

Russia is the only party directly profiteering from this.
Jesus fucking Christ!
I'm getting tired of this crap. It's like a bunch of children arguing over a sandbox.
[sp] In fact, that is EXACTLY what it is.[/sp]
