New York took a step toward becoming the 15th state to legalize medical marijuana today when the State Senate Health Committee passed the Senate’s medical cannabis bill (S. 4041-B). The State Assembly’s version, A. 9016, passed the Health Committee in January.
It should be noted, however, that the Senate Health Committee passed the bill in 2009 as well but it never reached the Senate. Additionally, the Assembly has passed medical pot bills in 2007 and 2008.
Still, advocates are optimistic. “Let’s hope New York legislators will follow the lead of New Jersey, the state next door, which is about to become the 14th state to implement an effective medical marijuana law,” said MPP’s Noah Member
Source: High Times
Basically the news is that the Senate Health Committee gave the go ahead for this bill to hit the Senate. This doesn't make the bill for medical marijuana a sure thing in NY, it just means that the gears for this bill to be ratified is in motion.
I've also looked up the specifics of these bills. So far I've found details only for the A09016 bill. The other one is hard to garner due to gov. websites having shitty web design. Though A09016 bill will
Legalizes the possession, manufacture, use, delivery, transfer, transport or
administration of marihuana by a certified patient or designated caregiver for
a certified medical use; prescribes procedures for such possession,
manufacture, etc. including certification of patients by their practitioner,
and that, in the practitioner's professional judgment, the serious condition
should be treated with the medical use of marihuana; provides that possession
or manufacture of marihuana shall be lawful under these provisions provided
that the marihuana possessed does not exceed a total aggregate weight of two
and a half ounces; directs the department of health to monitor such use and
promulgate rules and regulations for registry identification cards; provides
for reports by the department of health to the governor and legislature on the
medical use of marihuana.
In short it would allow the distribution of medical marijuana, and the possession of two and a half ounces at a time. The Dept. of Health would set up the rules and registration of id cards.
I'm unable to get any more specifics of allowable illnesses to be prescribes because the bill is still in infancy. Though it does have some support it might take at least a year for any real progress. Reason being that the New York Senate is super slow. So I'll keep this thread updated if I find out anything more, but if you guys can help me out I'd appreciate it.
Another step towards the legalization of marijuana in the US!
FUCK YES! I hope we get Medical Marijuana here in NY. This is amazing news.
I can't wait until the stuff gets legalized over here. NYC cops like to mess around with you when you are high. :downs:
I'm surprised NY doesn't have MMJ already. They are the most progressive state on the east coast
hope this happens, i wish the senate wasn't so fucking slow here. problem is, they still want cultivation to be illegal here which blows cause thats all i really want out of a bill here. buying weed illegally isn't a problem for me, i get medical shit anyways :D
it would be cool to get a legal id but i think they only want it for people with like cancer and shit, which i don't have...
