• Tobacco displays to be banned from shops
Tobacco displays in shops will be banned in England as part of a package of measures to discourage smoking. Instead, cigarettes and other products will have to be kept under-the-counter from 2012 for large stores and 2015 for small shops, ministers have announced. A consultation will also be launched on whether manufacturers should be forced to put cigarettes into plain packets. A fifth of adults smoke - a figure which has remained steady in recent years after decades of rapid falls.
Source Personally as an occasional smoker I'd happily welcome this ban. What do people think of this? Also No Smoking Day today.
Yeah they are pulling this here in Finland too I believe though i don't give a shit about shit like that, because you can't quite make cigarettes illegal, which would be the most efficient way to discourage smoking.. kinda anyway this doesn't stop smokers from purchasing their smokes, but is good considering the future. if they remain under the counter, consumption will lower over time i'm pretty sure, which is good. [sp]I'm a smoker too..[/sp]
I don't really see how this will help, to be honest...
I don't really see how this will help, to be honest...
It'll help current smokers and people giving up in that they won't be reminded of cigarettes when the go into the shop. It'll potentially stop some youngsters starting purely because they won't know what to look for.

[editline]9th March 2011[/editline] ban alcohol displays too
umm no. you don't need a shop sign to remind you of cigarettes
Put it this way, you're trying to stop smoking you've managed maybe a day or two and you pop down the shops to buy some milk. You go to pay, behind the cashier is a wall of cigarettes. When it's right there in front of you the temptation to buy is much greater. I've been there.
I dont need my goverment to tell me what is good for me. They can fuck off with these rules.
They've already done this in Canada, only they're not under the counter, they're where they've always been but covered by panels on a hinge. [editline]9th March 2011[/editline]
let's make cocaine and heroin legal then. after all, people should be able to do what they want with their bodies, right?
Uh yes, exactly.
I don't see the problem here, banning displays isn't going to make people stop smoking, it'll just discourage some, and others who are trying to quit will have it off a bit easier. Also, I noticed that in every thread about cigarettes, more than the threads about weed and other drugs, and alcohol, people seem to get the angriest about what the government is doing for some reason.
let's make cocaine and heroin legal then. after all, people should be able to do what they want with their bodies, right?
The difference is, that tobacco doesn't alter your perception of reality and put those around you in danger. Driving and smoking doesn't kill.

My campus shop doesn't display cigarettes just like this law wants. Guess what, you still want them. The temptation comes from entering the shop and knowing they're sold, not seeing the packets themselves.
The difference is, that tobacco doesn't alter your perception of reality and put those around you in danger. Driving and smoking doesn't kill.
Yes they do lmao
I think they should just be illegal, I guess this is one step closer to that
The governments make too much money off the taxes to consider making them illegal.
The governments make too much money off the taxes to consider making them illegal.
Then why the hell don't they legalize and tax drugs instead of wasting tax dollars in the futile war against them?
smoking is addictive and smokers get all angry and shit when they don't smoke for a while. i'd say that's close enough
Don't Rage and Drive, Kids!
Is there any specific research done to back this decision? All I read in the article can be summed up as "Campaigners believe"

Displaying cigarettes have been banned here for a few years now. Even behind the counter they have to hide them in windowless cabinets.

Yay, more dumb nannystate rules! Well it's better than forcing the manufacturers put them in plain packets but it's still an alarming phenomena. What are the "other products" that are put under the counter ? Porn? Condoms? Yes, smoking is harmful but I think the mass hysteria and the demonization of smokers and cigarettes has gotten way out of hand recently and alcohol is next on the list of the products the health nazis want to ban. You can see it already with calls to have alcohol advertisements banned with the "Think of the children!!!"-excuse. And somehow people seem to be okay with having everything that makes life worth living banned by old, presumably religious farts who don't want people to enjoy their lives.
I think they should just be illegal
It's illegal to smoke in a public place here. So I don't see the problem any more.
I don't smoke tobacco and don't ever plan to but I like to think that people should be able to take whatever they wish into their own bodies as long as it doesn't harm others directly

Basicly what people like that think.
let's make cocaine and heroin legal then. after all, people should be able to do what they want with their bodies, right?
There is a line on how dangerous a drug is. The goverments around the world keep lowering this line for some reason leaving us with less and less freedom. Also legalizing weed here in the Netherlands has left us with the lowest ammount of pot users in europe!
I don't smoke tobacco and don't ever plan to but I like to think that people should be able to take whatever they wish into their own bodies as long as it doesn't harm others directly
People can be wreckless. Without themselves being the ones directly to blame...
This is ridiculous. The government should not have this much control over a product.
I agree with this decision. I would fight against any decision to ban it, but this is a good step in killing our cigarette addiction. Now, if only they would do this to drinking... [editline]9th March 2011[/editline]
This is ridiculous. The government should not have this much control over a product.
When this 'product' is a main cause of cancer, and costs millions on health care costs, they should take steps. I agree it shouldn't be banned, but it shouldn't be allowed to be without restrictions when it's a known carcinogenic.
I don't really think this will change anything at all, people who want to smoke will still smoke, and almost everyone knows what kind of shops sell cigarettes or not.

Then you'd just be advocating almost full control over a person's life under the guise of saving money in taxes.
