Retail analysts say the world’s biggest retailer has reason to fear a small grocery chain that’s based in Idaho and boasts a business model that allows it to undercut Walmart on prices.

“WinCo arguably may be the best retailer in the western U.S.,” Flickinger says while touring a WinCo store. “WinCo is really unstoppable at this point,” he goes on. “They’re Walmart’s worst nightmare.”
Prices are kept low through a variety of strategies, the main one being that it often cuts out distributors and other middlemen and buys many goods directly from farms and factories. WinCo also trims costs by not accepting credit cards and by asking customers to bag their own groceries. Similar to warehouse membership stores like Sam’s Club and Costco, and also to successful discount grocers with small stores like Trader Joe’s and Aldi, WinCo stores are organized and minimalist, without many frills, and without the tremendous variety of merchandise that’s become standard at most supermarkets. “Everything is neat and clean, but basic,” Hauptman told Supermarket News. “Though the stores are very large, with a lot of categories, they lack depth or breadth of variety.”
While all these factors help WinCo compete with Walmart on price, what really might scare the world’s largest retailer is how WinCo treats its employees. In sharp contrast to Walmart, which regularly comes under fire for practices like understaffing stores to keep costs down and hiring tons of temporary workers as a means to avoid paying full-time workers benefits, WinCo has a reputation for doing right by employees. It provides health benefits to all staffers who work at least 24 hours per week. The company also has a pension, with employees getting an amount equal to 20% of their annual salary put in a plan that’s paid for by WinCo; a company spokesperson told the Idaho Statesman that more than 400 nonexecutive workers (cashiers, produce clerks and such) currently have pensions worth over $1 million apiece.
Better prices and better care of employees. That is what I call economic.
Anything that'll top Wal-Mart in the corporate food chain is okay in my book.
Sounds great.

I would be too, but I like my family being in Corporate Wal-Mart so they have jobs.
Fuck wal-mart. Pay me $7.50 to unload a goddamn semi-truck in a hot ass store for 8 hours, kiss my dick.
good. fuck wal-mart's almost-monopoly status. theres plenty of towns without a Target store or Food Lion, but jesus christ wal-marts are everywhere
This is good cause more competition means lower prices and better service. I just hope the employees don't get screwed over.

meanwhile costco would literally pay 2x that for the same job
I would say that Costco is already a pretty big competitor to Walmart. Also it seems that WinCo is doing a lot of things similarly to Costco, such as being minimalistic and treating its workers well. I can only hope that WinCo will stick to this philosophy even as they grow.

Not to mention allowing workers to unionize and giving full medical insurance.
I will never fucking forget the anti-union propaganda video they showed me at Wal-mart orientation. It literally said "don't join a union, because then you have somebody speaking for you and you don't have a voice of your own :downs:" disgusting.

you can't unionize in the state of arizona

It's the same deal for Target, our video's different but equally as funny.
Wal-Mart had Super Mario Bros Wii and other old wii games for like 40 dollars still
There happens to be a WinCo two towns over from where I live and the Super Wal-Mart happens to be one town over. Why is this store so far away from me?
*their neighborhood is sandwiched in-between two towns wal-mart to the right WinCo to the far left* At least I have Costco nearby too

Those are fun, but I much preferred the sexual harassment video. I learned that it is inappropriate to squeeze a woman's buttcheeks while making honking noises in the workplace.
WinCo doesn't accept cards? Guess I will never shop there then.
Capitalism in action. It is good to see this sort of thing.
WinCo also trims costs by not accepting credit cards
I wonder why? Do they still do debit cards?
Do they still do debit cards?
Yes, they do. I shop there a lot, the prices and the selection are great.
They only sell grocery items and that sort of thing though, as opposed to Wal-Mart selling literally everything.

Is that supposed to be a mating call?
Holy shit me and friend had to fight with these dumbass employees because they didnt believe that the futon was on sale! 4 employees kept saying we were wrong and FINALLY a manager dismisses them and gives us the futon for even cheaper than the sale. Fuck Wal-Mart.
EDIT:
Oh and i forgot to mention the damn thing was broken.
There's a WinCo about 10 minutes from my house in California. It's basically a lower quality non-membership Costco. It has the warehouse look to it, not my favorite place, but not terrible either.
visa, MasterCard, AmEx, and every other CC company charge the retailer around $0.20 per card swype.
they need to to keep all those CC payment servers running
I honestly can't see this branching out that well. Costco already has a practical monopoly on the no-frills bulk warehouse design, alongside Sam's Club (which is owned by Walmart), so the only trump card this place has is that it doesn't sell in bulk.
Along the west coast we already have something like this anyway called Smart & Final, which is literally almost the same design, and they never seem to be busy whenever I go there. I think, ultimately, a lot of people (especially upper class) don't want to buy food at a warehouse.
Plus their name stands for "winning company". Really? Couldn't think of anything better?
also Aldi is best

Walmart is more demonized than pot.
Capitalism in action. It is good to see this sort of thing.

Debit cards tend to charge a flat rate on transactions between like 2 and 4 bucks. So if you buy something less than 5 or 6 bucks with a debit card, the store loses money.
It's even worse on credit cards. The flat rate tends to be lower, but they charge more rates and the more banks it goes through the worse it is.
There's no winning with accepting cards. Goods have become artificially inflated in part because of credit and debit fees.
We have a competitor to taco bell in our town that keeps costs down in the basement because they're cash only. I think a combination burrito is like, 99¢

This is a bit of a dealbreaker for me. I like that they're giving walmart some competition but until I can buy tires, an air conditioner, a week's supply of groceries, ammunition, video games, cell phones and an oil change in a single trip to WinCo I'm not going to be shopping there. I'm pretty damn picky about brands on some things, too. Electronics, appliances, auto parts, tires, all items I refuse to buy generics of because the generics are often shit-tier quality.
So yeah. Good on WinCo, but they're gonna have to step up their variety before I start shopping there.

When I was in Germany I went into a store that was selling GBA games for €20...
Winco is a really good store, it's not that special though. It doesn't really treat it's Employees the greatest though, however that seems to be the norm for any Grocery Store..

Wal-Marts known for keeping old stock for full price.

Our Wal-Mart has about 15 copies of this for 20 bucks each.

And about 2 years back I saw a Gameboy Color for $79.99
