At their latest press event, Microsoft unveiled the latest version of the Windows operating system, and revealed plans to give it away for free to Windows 7 and 8.1 users. However, the most interesting development didn't happen until the end of the day, when Microsoft showed off their new Hololens.
...
Kipman says that all Windows 10 OS-powered systems will have the holographic APIs installed. This means that Windows 10 users will be able to run Windows Holograms via their computer. It will be compatible with many different VR consoles, including Oculus Rift and Motion Leap.
If the device doesn't cost a fortune I would definitely get one, they haven't released the price.

I wonder how many people will be making crazy 3D giant cock holograms with this device.
I'm more interested in seeing an actual consumer product, not fake cgi bullshit they made for the ad.
Like things they could actually tell consumers are; how good the tracking is; how it's not a gimmick.
Stupid ass companies aren't innovating, they're just advertising.
So that's why they bought Minecraft...

You've brought up a great potential though. Multiplayer AR; upload shapes to the cloud with gps data attached.

I wasn't, like, getting at anything else.
Literally just think the majority of things made on/with this will be phallic-shaped.

If they can make a perfect tracking algorithm displaying images over your environment wont be hard, all the interactivity stuff seems like a pipe-dream at the minute.
If it's anything like the add (it won't be), then it's one of the most incredible creations of the modern day.

The Vr is pretty sweet and believable because a track IR and some stickers could easily get that done. Although the motion control seems a bit far fetched, and I'm not even going to think of what it'll cost.

Not sure really how much of this is CGI but this demo makes it look really convincing...
I honestly won't care until there is a working prototype.
I honestly won't care until there is a working prototype.
Although the video I posted doesn't have it Microsoft has another one featuring the device itself
A consumer grade prototype I have no clue
I give this at least 5 years to develop, and another 5 years to get a "cheap" consumer version
Well, tracker-less augmented reality solutions have existed for a while. If there's any innovation to be made it is to make the display as seamless as possible, like, somewhat like Oculus Rift in a sense where you can see both the camera capture and the real world without significant latency.

That's rather impressive, actually.
Facepunch everywhere in my house if I had this
I don't give a fuck about any of this shit until they figure out how to make what that lady is doing go faster than doing the same thing with a mouse.
It's cool, but if this is supposed to be a release feature for Windows 10 I can't see it getting much better in such little time.

Not a launch thing, it'll be released during the 10's "timeframe". So anytime before they end official support (like they did with 7 just a while back). Around 1-2 years before we get it I bet
And note that this is still a prototype. When you compare something like the Rift DK1 with the newest Crescent Bay version the difference is enormous. HoloLens (fucking corny name lmao) will be much improved when it comes out.

Not sure how legit that is though - I was reading this article which suggested the actual working prototype is still very bulky, warm and tethered.
Frankly wouldn't it make more sense for it to be a mobile device that used a home computer to do all the heavy lifting and just streamed the relevant data through WIFI?
The Verge apparently did a hands on with it and its pretty far along.

Imagine you were messing around and BAM, Postal's ass in your kitchen wall
Holgram poop everywhere.
Literally shitposting.
It's amazing how far we are coming along with this type of technology now. I hope someday we'll have a system like the Full Dive system from SAO. It may be a pipedream that isn't really possible, but goddamn it'd be amazing.
Also, this type of system would really be beneficial for museums which want to illustrate virtual spaces and areas. I mean imagine going into an exhibit as the museum for something like a Native American exhibit, and instead you are immersed into a hologram replica of a Native American village which you can interact with. It'd be amazing. Not only from the perspective of the technological advancement, but also just simply because it'd allow for better methods of teaching education.
Which brings me onto my next hope... I really wish this would be used as a method for teaching education on a one on one perspective. Teachers could give tutoring programs in which they teach through this system, and be able to have people who would otherwise be busy with work or doing stuff at home complete their studies and such before taking GED tests. I really believe systems like Khan Academy will use this.
Microsoft had that demo tech that stabilised videos by making a 3d recreation of the video and changing the camera position so this is probably built partially from that.
I can finally have my waifus live with me!
Err, yeah it's pretty cool I think I might play Minecraft or something...
finally i can have hentai pinups on my wall without my parents judging me
It looks pretty cool.
I think it'd be pretty interesting if you could hook up with other HoloLens users and share a "world". Imagine if you could share it with thousands of people. Put on the googles and VR objects all over the place.

The consumer product isn't done yet, but according to Peter Bright the latency is basically non-existent: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/01/hands-on-with-hololens-making-the-virtual-real/
Kinda funny how people on the internet are so reluctant to actually search for something, using the internet. Making uninformed comments are apparently easier.
Nice CG concept video. I'll come back when it's actually happening.
