Rich people buy a mansion by their mansion in order to destroy it
With its six bedrooms, two-car garage, 5.5 bathrooms, sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and access to some of the best schools in all of California, the mansion at 333 Belvedere Avenue in the tony San Francisco suburb of Belvedere has a lot to offer.
And relatively speaking, it was a steal at $4.2 million--down from an initial asking price of $7.5 million. But the property presented a problem for neighbors Clark and Sharon Winslow, who purchased the house next door for $19 million in 2008: It blocked a portion of their view. So, naturally, the Winslows bought the house and demolished it in order to remove it from their home's line of sight. People in Marin are very serious about their views. Two years ago, the previous owners of 333 Belevedere Ave., who paid $7 million for it in 2004, fell behind on their mortgage payments and Bank of America repossessed the house.
Olivia Hsu Decker, who lives nearby and has sold a bevvy of multi-million dollar homes in neighborhood as a realtor at Decker Bullock Sotheby's International Realty, told the Marin Independent Journal that the demolition will be welcome. "The house was pretty beat up anyway," she said. "The people hadn't lived there in the last two years."The Winslows plan on turning the newly empty property into an open, grass-filled yard.Last year, Bloomberg Businessweek named Belvedere the sixth most expensive small town in America.Click here to see some pictures of the now-demolished home, and take a look at the CBS News report below for more:
Throwing away money for the best view in the world
regardless of it being huge, it's an ugly fucking house
I hope they did something good with the land, like made it a nice garden to add to the view.
Yeah, deny some other people's choice of living in that house by demolishing it because you want to see the pretty bay area.
truth be told, that house was vacant for the past two years and it was beat up, but there's a chance someone might come and modify that house.
It's not like there's thousands of other houses that are empty and for sale across the entire nation.
This kind of thing happens all the time, it's not really news. (Is it?)
"5.5 bathrooms"
Half a bathroom?
"5.5 bathrooms"

And these people decided to buy it, and do what they wanted with it. Are you saying people shouldn't be allowed to buy homes because you don't like what they do with them? It was for sale, they purchased it.

Yeah, typically a bathroom without a shower.

Yay housing crisis!
"5.5 bathrooms"
Half a bathroom?
That means it has only a sink and toilet, no bathtub or shower.
edit: ninja'd 3 times
Oh. Where I'm from, we always call those "water closets".

Sickening, isn't it?
yeah, giving birth to children they can't support, stop having sex africans.
You are aware that the reason the average African family has so many kids in the first place is out of desperation, right? Guess not.
The logic behind it is simple: the more kids that they have, the greater the chances are that maybe one at least will survive until adulthood and can support the family then. Even if the kids don't survive that long, they can be sent to work around age 4 or 5 and make a little money.
"5.5 bathrooms"
Half a bathroom?
Just a toilet and a sink, no shower. In building plans, that's not a full bathroom, so that's how you get the .5
holyfuck I got ninja'd.
There's some of those here in Idaho too. The name of the game here is "Move in next to an Air Force Base, then sue them because the military aircraft that have been operating there for nearly a century are too loud."

so if you have 4 half bathrooms, can you list it as 2 whole bathrooms?
so if you have 4 half bathrooms, can you list it as 2 whole bathrooms?
I suppose. You'd just have to bathe in the sinks.
The world really needs socialism...
meanwhile in africa
More like, meanwhile in the rest of the world.
The world really needs socialism...
Please don't start this
Well if they bought the property they can do what they want with it in accordance with the local laws. Nothing really news worthy here other than rich people being rich people.
The world really needs socialism...
what are you saying dude
this absolutely has no base for this thread and you could replace the word "socialism" with anything:
"The world really needs oligarchism"
"The world really needs theocracy"
"The world needs more anarchy"
please stop acting like a windbag
The world really needs socialism...
I think monetary equality is good in some countries, but bad for others.
Man, how fucking cool would it be if they fixed it up, and had like a bridge thing going between both mansions, creating one MegaMansion?
Agreed. The only true form of government that should be allowed to exist is monarchy.
Anything else is an abomination that needs to be cast down.
