• Plans for 20% VAT rate on pasties and sausage rolls to be scrapped

The government is to reverse its plans to impose VAT on Cornish pasties, the BBC has learned. Ministers have also reduced the intended 20% charge which was due to be levied on static caravans to 5%. The U-turn from Chancellor George Osborne's Budget follows a large-scale protest by bakers and caravanning enthusiasts. The government has altered the definition of what is a "hot" pasty to allow the reversal of its plans. After the amendment, food such as sausage rolls or pasties sold on shelves - that is, cooling down, rather than being kept hot in a special cabinet - will not be liable for VAT. During a parliamentary debate last week, MPs from all three main parties criticised Mr Osborne's proposals, arguing they were unenforceable and would have an adverse impact on jobs and businesses. Currently, VAT is not charged on most food and drink, or hot baked goods, but is payable on takeaway food sold to be eaten hot. However, hot savouries including pasties and pies are exempt. The U-turn would effectively maintain this situation Static caravans do not currently incur VAT. Common sense holy shit.
Good, cheaper pastries! Bad, Government will probably cut more police funding or some shit to make up the money that would have been made by this.

OH, you mean pastries.
So... what exactly drove them to try levying a 20% additional tax specifically on pasties and sausage rolls in the first place?
a 20% tax on pastries? wow, I would be protesting that too [editline]28th May 2012[/editline]
So... what exactly drove them to try levying a 20% additional tax specifically on pasties and sausage rolls in the first place?
i thought VAT was on almost everything
People seriously eat that?
Looks like beef, onion and potato so yes.
mhmhm potatoes
Yay, our hot pastries are safe!
I had them confused with these:
Because that was the major thing wrong with the budget all along, not the reduced tax on the extremely well off or the increased tax on pensioners or anything.
u can only save the economy by taxing pasties y do people not understand this omg ur all so dumb
i thought VAT was on almost everything
I'm pretty sure it is, I was just wondering why those products were singled out for an additional 20% tax hike.
I'm pretty sure it is, I was just wondering why those products were singled out for an additional 20% tax hike.
Actually, loads of food is duty free - they were bumping the tax on pastries up to the standard 20% for most other luxury goods (like confectionery, takeaway or restaurant food, etc.)
I'm pretty sure it is, I was just wondering why those products were singled out for an additional 20% tax hike.
Most food is tax free, but take-away food (Pizza hut, Mcdonalds, chip shop etc) all has VAT whereas take-away pasties and pies don't, so the government wanted to 'close the loophole'
I just remember how ridiculous it was when all our politicians rushed to show how down to earth they where and all absolutely loved pasties. It was like watching a lawyer proclaim how much he enjoyed working down the mines as a past time. It was just pathetic, and that goes for all three main parties. So they scrap this but not the NHS bill? Really Tories? For some reason I imagined paste [editline]28th May 2012[/editline] weird foreigners eating paste
Hey, potential civilian uprising avoided here, just imagine the rage of the Cornish people.

You'd think across the globe at least one would try that.
People seriously eat that?
people eat mcdonalds so why not?
What is a VAT?
