Sexist attitudes in startup culture got a major showcase on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, one of the industry's leading conferences. In a separate incident online, the hateful, bigoted musings of a media company's chief tech officer got public attention that forced his firing — but he'd been tweeting sexist content for years. They are the latest flare-ups for a community struggling to get more women in its ranks. On Sunday, after an all-night hackathon at TechCrunch Disrupt, Australian programmers presented Titstare. "Titstare is an app where you take photos of yourself staring at tits," Jethro Batts explained. He went on to say, "I think this is the breast hack ever."
Get ready, round 5 Million, FIGHT!
You sure it's not just because more men do tech things to begin with? For example there are literally no women taking the IT course I'm doing at college. NONE AT ALL
You sure it's not just because more men do tech things to begin with? For example there are literally no women taking the IT course I'm doing at college. NONE AT ALL
That's clearly because they're being put down by the patriarchy

NONE AT ALL
And we can't have the mindset that we have to break up the statistics of male domination by giving a female an unfair advantage if they're not in the same skill set as another person competing for the job. The Tech industry is competitive and there's just less females in it. It's not really an epidemic, it's more of because the skills weren't really essential and mostly formed out of hobbies till basically last year.
Also, I don't understand why different genders happening to want different majors is sexism, either. People are free to do and study what they see fit, choosing something that happens to make an inequality isn't sexist.
My friend who's going through tech classes and all that, basically says there is 3 girls in his whole class, in college. Do they expect some sort of free reign into the tech field without having experience? I'm sure the women who -are- in tech fields, sure as shit worked their asses off to get where they are.
Also, I don't understand why different genders happening to want different majors is sexism, either. It's more of because well, there's just fucking less of them.
I am sure there is some sexism in the industry but when I was in highschool I took a web design class and a basic java class and there was some damn good coders in there who were female. When I got to college, my java and visual basic classes had a lot of females in them. But they were still dominated by men. Technology just seems to be a thing that interests guys more than girls. There is nothing stopping a girl from taking a class involving computers, or technology. But maybe if a female and male both applied at the same tech firm, I dont know if they would pick the male over the female even if they had the same qualifications.

If women want to be part of the industry, they should and will be held to the same standards that men are. You're not going to get hired because you have different organs between your legs.
It's somewhat of a catch-22 situation. Most of the time, the sexist people in the industry doesn't even know what they're doing is sexist, or how severe it actually is because of the LACK of women in the industry in the first place.
If women want to be part of the industry, they should and will be held to the same standards that men are. It's the same with every field.
For example there are literally no women taking the IT course I'm doing at college. NONE AT ALL
You don't suppose that has anything to do with how shitty IT generally is for women? You really can't blame it all on women simply not choosing to go into these industries and end the conversation there. Stories like these come out all the time and it's no wonder the industry is dominated by men.
Also, I don't understand why different genders happening to want different majors is sexism, either. People are free to do and study what they see fit, choosing something that happens to make an inequality isn't sexist.
Because there must be some reason that less women want to pursue tech careers than men, and that's obviously not a good thing.
The lack of women in tech goes a lot deeper than just "girls don't have the skills".
The Tech industry is competitive and there's just less females in it. It's not really an epidemic, it's more of because the skills weren't really essential and mostly formed out of hobbies till basically last year.
So why don't women have tech hobbies? Is that because its deemed less acceptable for women to have that hobby?
do you guys genuinely think A) that there is no real reason for there being less women in the tech industry and B) that even if there was no logical explanation for the lack of women this would not in any way impede women who nonetheless have an interest in that field [editline]12th September[/editline] i mean even accepting that there could be a decent reason for the lack of women in the tech industry (hint: there isn't), it's incredibly shortsighted to assume that an industry run, operated and permeated through and through by men would have absolutely no problems with allowing women to get into it as a serious student
do you guys genuinely think A) that there is no real reason for there being less women in the tech industry and B) that even if there was no logical explanation for the lack of women this would not in any way impede women who nonetheless have an interest in that field
There's definitely lots of subtle sexism here on Facepunch. As for the whole tech industry, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same. It's been male-dominated for so long that I wouldn't be surprised that there is a workplace culture that has developed which is incompatible with women.
There's no reason to assume that, in an ideal world without any sexism, the same number of women would want to be in the tech field as men. Any argument that rests on that assumption, such as: "There are less women then men in the tech industry, therefore it is sexist" doesn't hold any water. This isn't denying that sexism doesn't exist, but that line of reasoning is bunk.

The article in the OP does not say at all that the industry is sexist simply because there are more men than women. It gives many, actual examples of sexism against women.

i want to be in the house maid industry but damn women keep oppressing me they are all raping me with their eyes (User was banned for this post ("Shitposting" - MaxOfS2D))
what is the relevancy of this in a thread about sexism towards women? are you saying being sexist towards women is normal or expected because there are more men in the IT field?
He didn't even say anything on that. He's just saying that there are less of them studying for it and as a result, less going into the field. How did you even get that from his post.

NONE AT ALL
And this doesn't strike you as odd at all? Women make up 50% of the planet and yet 0% signed up for your college's computing course. I'd say that's a pretty big fucking cause for concern, or at least curiosity. Apology for anecdotal evidence (blog post) but hopefully this convinces at least someone that the problem is more serious than they think. That's why it's irrelevant and why he's arguing thus.

I don't get it. Titstare is obviously supposed to be a joke. There doesn't seem to be anything to report on here...

Girl's don't exist on the internet. No sexism there. [editline]11th September 2013[/editline] I've heard myths where girls go to school to get more knowledge, while boys go to jupiter to get more stupider. Psh.

That behavior removes all the perks of growing as a professional; it drops their motivation, limits their contacts, and reduces their work ethic.
