Referendum may see Venice elect to secede from Italy
Voting began Sunday on a referendum on whether Venice and its surrounding region should secede from the rest of Italy, in an attempt to restore its 1,000-year history as a sovereign republic.
La Serenissima — or the Most Serene Republic of Venice — was an independent trading power for a millennium before its last leader was deposed by Napoleon in 1797. The republic encompassed not just Venice but what is now the surrounding region of Veneto and it is there that the vote will take place from Sunday until Friday.
Campaigners have been inspired by the example of Scotland, which will hold its referendum on independence in September, and Catalonia, where around half the population say they want to break away from Spain.
Activists say that the latest polling shows that 65% of voters in the Veneto region, which includes historic cities such as Treviso, Vicenza and Verona, are in favour of cutting ties with Rome.
Wtf is going on? I read this in a newspaper today.
Clearly the Russians are to blame for this. :v:
What are they going to do? Float their city away from Italy?

Well Venice actually might, with all that global warming going on
So, they want to become the great Venetian republic again right eh?
No prosciutto for you!
Don't get any ideas about taking Dalmatia and Albania again.

also reminder that some of the parties that defend this, are EXTREMELY racist, like lega nord.
basically this "separatist" movement is mostly backlash against the poorer south and immigrants from africa.
Let's add to the splitting off from places thing.
Florida, can you split away from America? Maybe North Ireland can seperate and unite with England?

Aren't all separatist movements racist / classicist in a degree?
Considering what's been going on in Italian politics in the past decade or so, I don't blame them one bit.
I felt ultimate deja-vu when I opened this thread; but yeah I hope they get independence

North Italy has little in common with South Italy. It would be better if the South and North were separate countries.
Russia is at the doorstep barking at Europe, what does Europe do? Fractures into little pieces; divide and conquer style.

What would Ireland be seceding from..?

Russia is not going to last long with it's current style of government and current socioeconomic conditions. My bet would be 5 years tops before Russia experiences what Ukraine experienced. It's probably why Putin has been going fucking nuts, has to shift focus onto Crimea and blame Russias problems on the [del]jews[/del] gays

Themselves.
Just BTW, it's not just the city of Venice that wants to secede, but rather the region of Veneto, of which Venice is the capital:

...it's actually quite a large chunk of Italy:

I live in Veneto and people around here are pretty excited because of this. Basically we'll be the new San Marino: no VAT, more money for everyone, and many more benefits. The only downside as far as I know is that we won't be able to ask the italian government for aid in case some disaster happens.

That's exactly Putin is doing.

Long term they are going to have to abandon the place. Sea levels are rising and the ground there is subsiding.
