James Comey rejects invitation to testify before Senate Intelligence Committee
Former FBI director James Comey has rejected an invitation to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee next week.
Comey, who was fired on Tuesday by President Trump, was invited for a closed session before the panel by Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va.
Warner said on MSNBC Friday afternoon that Comey would not appear before the committee on Tuesday. Burr's office confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Comey would not meet with the committee behind closed doors next week.

The plot thickens
I wonder if he's waiting something or what he wants to do.
[sp]I wonder if this occurred because he got threatened by the administration. The same would go with deciding not to get an independent prosecutor.[/sp]
Okay, I've got to be missing something. Why would he refuse to do this, exactly?

The public explanation is that he "wants to take a break and lay low" after being let go, but that seems a little... incomplete, I guess? Perhaps something deeper is going on but that's about all we have in terms of a public explanation.
This entire administration is a goddamn clown fiesta.
How much has Trump actually accomplished throughout his first 100 days, other than just rescinding every single thing that Obama passed? Why was Comey actually fired? Why is Sean Spicer still in the White House? Who in their right mind wanted Sessions as Attorney General? How much did DeVos have to pay so that Republicans actually wanted her in office? Where the fuck has Pence been? Why was Gorsuch the accepted SC justice? How come Trump has more golf outings than he does passed legislation? It's like Russian roulette, but with more Russia and each round is a guaranteed chance to just shoot yourself in the head.
Question really is does Trump have tapes and what's on those tapes?
Very little else makes sense
Maybe it has something to do with it being a closed door session?

Closed door sessions are favorable for the investigation. Watch any of the Clapper, Yates, Comey, NSA dudes testimony. They can't say anything useful because they can't publicly speak about classified material in an open session.
In a Closed door session he can actually answer most of their questions.
Even if Trump did have something incriminating on some tapes or something, if I were Comey and had legitimate, undeniable evidence of Russian ties, I'd just say fuck it. Let him post those tapes. At least I'd be taking him to Hell with me.

He's not able to reveal that classified material anyways since he's been fired so that's a moot argument

Picturing Gandalf & Balrog.

Maybe this was the entire point of his firing, to end the embarrassment of having the Trump WH's dirty laundry aired before the Senate? He can no longer talk about classified material, and his replacement will probably be a Trump lapdog who will carefully steer the Committee away from anything damaging to the administration.

It may be because he can't discuss classified material any longer, it may be he wants to wait for something more, or he may not trust the committee itself.
He probably doesn't trust a closed session.
Was just watching the news, the posting was "Comey had better hope those tapes aren't released" :Trump.
Jesus christ.
Any news on the request sent to the white house about the tapes?

I mean, the investigation wasn't over yet. He probably doesn't quite have undeniable evidence.
Gents, I'd be wary of the OP's source. Read the other articles, some are so slanted they're sideways.

CNN's article says it's just a timing issue
"We just heard from the director that he's not able to make Tuesday," Warner told CNN's Manu Raju. "It's my hope that that we will be able to find a time. I think it's really important that the Congress, and more broadly the American people, hear Director Comey's side of the story."
Actually, I rescind my statement, I've done some digging on the Examiner. Notably right-leaning, but generally have journalistic integrity in terms of factual reporting.
my theory was that he was rejecting the invitation so he could then be subpoena'd "against his will", thus preventing trump from accusing him of just being in a hurry to stir shit; appearing recalcitrant but giving the same info would potentially serve to annoy trump and dial back any claims that comey's just in it for publicity
