So my girlfriend is going to get a new camera very soon and after hours of research, we have narrowed it down to a D7100 and a D5300, but she cannot decide which one to get.
Of course there are the advantages of Wifi, GPS, newer processor and very slighty better low light performance on the D5300, but the D7100 has faster shooting, dual slot cards, better AF, weather sealing, an AF motor and other things.
What would you guys recommend, would she notice a difference in the low light performance or IQ to be worth getting the D5300 or would she be better off going with the better AF, weather sealing etc on the D7100.
She knows her stuff about cameras and photograhy, so I feel as if the D5300 may be a bit basic for her. She's not going to be using it for videos much, rather, bird photography.
Low-light performance is always a vital part of a camera as it's the difference between grained, detail-less images and crisp, detailed images with deep blacks.
I personally don't use auto-focus that much as it isn't reliable. I vouch for the D5300. It's fast enough if you set the shutter speed high enough.
D7100, it'll last you a lot longer because of the build quality, and the better AF and the AF motor are more important than gimmicks like wifi and gps. The dual control wheels are also really useful.

What good is the slightly better high iso performance if the AF isn't going to be able to deal with it.
The D7100 has almost double the "cross type" AF points which are what are necessary for AF in low light for subjects that aren't still (otherwise you could just use the center point all the time by focusing then recomposing view).
OP says she's going to use it for bird photography, and if low iso performance is a factor then she'll be using it in rather low light, in which case the AF to focus on the birds will be more useful than a tiny bit less noise.
Ordered the D7100, we both had a gut feeling we would regret getting the D5300, as well as nearly everywhere pointed to getting the D7100.
honestly, if she knows a bit and stuff about her photography
it was a good decision going for the D7100
