LOS ANGELES -Rowdy fans are fighting and starting bonfires in the streets, as well as surrounding and hitting cars outside the Staples Center after the Lakers 83-79 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the NBA finals.
Rocks, bottles, and even one rat trap are reported to have been thrown at officers, according to LAPD Spokeswoman April Harding.
A mob of people was caught on camera surrounding a taxi attempting to leave the Staples Center, trapping the vehicle before hitting, rocking, and jumping on it, then opening the passengers door.
A person in a Celtics jersey was seen being beaten by several people on the street in the area of Flower and Olympic after attempting to protect his car from vandalism. Soon after, several other random fights started erupting in the streets.
Several people were seen pouring onto the eastbound 10 freeway ramp at Figueroa.
Officers have started arresting violent revelers.
Police immediately urged people to clear away from outside the Staples Center after the Lakers NBA Championship win, then soon declared an unlawful assembly as hundreds of rowdy Los Angeles Lakers fans poured into the streets near Staples Center after the Lakers victory.
The increased police presence and extra precautions taken tonight is all to prevent fans from violently rioting outside the Staples Center, like the last time the Lakers won a championship in 2009.
Los Angeles police outside the Lakers game at Staples Center have cleared a crowd of fans who were gathered at the plaza near the Nokia Theatre, because they said there were too many people.
According to the L.A. Times, Los Angeles Fire Department inspectors made stops at several bars near the Staples Center around half-time, and even shut down Riordan's Tavern on Figueroa Street for being over capacity.
At around 7:00 p.m., police were turning away pedestrians on Olympic Boulevard near the Chick Hearn Blue Line station.
The Los Angeles Police Department reportedly deployed hundreds of extra officers on patrol across the city, including on horseback and on foot.
Last year, fans celebrated the Lakers' championship victory over the Orlando Magic by lighting fires, looting stores and damaging vehicles, including a city bus. The game was played in Florida, but that didn't stop fans from storming downtown L.A.
In 2000, after the Lakers won their first NBA title in 12 years, fans rioted outside Staples Center, destroying two police cars and leaving more than 70 other vehicles damaged.
City officials say, that's no way to celebrate.
"We do not celebrate victory by destroying the city," said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.
This is a sad testament that you have to get up here and say to somebody, come on, don't ruin a great day," Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said on Wednesday.
Chief Beck says deployment will be up to five times larger than last year.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said he has notified hundreds of deputies to be on hand in case the police department needs backup.
"We will be very, very aggressive in prosecuting people who aren't acting according to the law, Villaraigosa said.
Several road closures will be in effect for the game.
This is why I despise Lakers fans.

Fuck the Lakers.
Fuck the Lakers.
I agree.
Fuck sports, why the hell do they get all worked up over a pointless game?
This is why Los Angeles is the worst city ever
Fuck sports, why the hell do they get all worked up over a pointless game?
Not all sport fans are like this, just obnoxious LA fans. LA being Dodgers or Lakers fans.
I thought LA had perpetual riots?
Not all sport fans are like this, just obnoxious LA fans. LA being Dodgers or Lakers fans.
Yes, but it does seem to pervade other teams and games, too.
Geez, and this is what happens when they win?
I still want to go down there tomorrow wearing all Celtics gear.

it was nice knowing you
Fuck sports, why the hell do they get all worked up over a pointless game?
I wish I were a sports fan.
I wish I had had that imposed upon me by my daddy so I could sit with my friends and rejoice in the victories of our favorite team.
I read "LA riots over" and my first thought was "fuck finally!" and then I clued in.
2am sucks ass :saddowns:
Why do Angelenos riot over anything?
Well considering Boston fans attacked the LA Lakers bus back in 08 and were fucking shit up too, it's not really just LA.
Although maybe LA fans take it a bit too far.
Some kid at my school got beat up for wearing a Celtics Jersey the last day of school.
It's fucking ridiculous.
I don't hate the Lakers, just the fans.
"HURR DURR WE WON LET'S BURN DOWN THE CITY TO CELEBRATE AND BECOME FAMOUS."
Yay lets destroy out city because our team won. Only in America.
Bad day to be in LA.

First thing that came to mind
Yay lets destroy out city because our team won. Only in America.
This happens other places too...
There's like 40 cop cars out there. There's no cop cars at E3.
Which game causes violence again..?
I'd rather have a happy riot in LA. I can only imagine what would go down in Boston.
I just got out of the traffic jam that owes part of its thanks to this. Congrats to the Lakers on winning, but fuck, I'd like to be able to use the damned 10 freeway.
I was hoping LA would lose just so I could see LA alight all the way from the Mojave. Fucking Lakers.
The difference between the NBA, and NHL. One has to burn down the whole damn city. The other just has to drink beers, and beat the shit out of the other teams fans.
Fuck the Lakers.
fuck you
I was watching some of the riot by the side of the 101. Some people tried to flip a taco truck, which appeared to be too heavy, so some of them just unzipped their pants and pee'd on it.
fuck you
