Walmart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the U.S. and another big chunk in its challenging Brazilian market.
The stores being shuttered account for a fraction of the company's 11,000 stores worldwide and less than 1 percent of its global revenue.
The closures will affect 16,000 workers, 10,000 of them in the U.S.

In the U.S., 154 locations will be closed, most of them small format stores called Walmart Express, which were launched as a test program in 2011.
I couldn't imagine many Walmart Super centers being closed, makes sense that they are mostly test stores. I imagine the rest are small non-supercenter stores.
Well that's just life, it's never perfect. Some of those jobs will probably be transferred to other stores. Still, it is sad to see so many jobs go, but Walmart aren't a job-providing charity.

Knowing Wal-Mart's track record with employees, I'm betting the majority will be let go with a gift card while any managerial workers will get picked up by other companies.
Phew, just Walmart, not Asda. You had me worried there since my store is struggling. Jesus.
Still absolutely sucks for the people working there. I doubt there'll be much severance to be given.

Meh, they're better off. Walmart treats their employees like dog shit.

Yep, better off jobless than treated poorly.

Not even remotely close to what I meant. I meant they'll find a better job.

In this economy? Bit unlikely.

If the only skills they have are walmart based, guess what kind of jobs they'll be able to net.

Depends on the store and the people you work with like any other job in this country.
My experience with Walmart was really good.

The economy is fine. Unemployment is at 5%.

Other retail probably.

So they're really no better off at all

Do you just have to argue with everything I say? Depending on what you do, like if you get into management, retail isn't THAT bad.
There are many other retail jobs other then Wal-Mart, there is Target, Cosco, BJ's, your local super grocery store retail chain.

I don't believe I've argued with you before. I'm just saying most retail jobs are very similar, what you do here is probably going to be what you do there, and shitty customers is constant no matter what you do in retail.
They have no way to compete with the local stores here in Brazil.

I've never worked there, but from what I hear Walmart is a step below even other retail jobs most of the time.

I've worked there, Sam's club and winn Dixie, Wal-Mart and Sam's were ass mainly because of management, winn Dixie is somewhat better in management but still can suck and customers are still ass, all I'm saying repeating themes will follow regardless of retail store.
a big problem walmart has is how densely packed the stores are in some places. Where I lived last, had I was right next to one walmart and just a ways out from two others. If I lived a few minutes further south they'd all be 5 minutes in 3 different directions, and ONE of them was built just to upgrade an old dying store, quite a few years back, which is currently a dead husk just a mile further down the street.
stores that are closing in the US are very likely to be decrepit old 80's style buildings in crowded areas where they're literally their own competition like in my area.
also, the average employees affected per store is apparently 37.17, I'm sure that many people can find new work in the same area. If your skills are explicitly walmart level (very rarely the case) there's still a thousand bottom of the barrel options to look into.
on the alternative, when walmart moves into a neighborhood with few major businesses and far out from other convenience, it's a huge boon to employment in the area and often noticeably increases the quality of the area
