It's actually pretty common for dolphins to follow boats, especially tiny ones. When my dad and I go far away from the coast (we do have a tiny boat) dolphins usually follow for some time. They sure are fun.

I've never gotten closer than about 10 yards from a dolphin, as they've never been keen on staying near out boats.

Where the hell do you live? On just about every fishing trip of a day or more that I've been on there have been dolphins either riding the bow waves or chasing the boat, and riding in the wake. I wish they'd fucking leave me alone because they love bait and it's illegal to hook the fuckers, not that they ever get hooked but they're like sealions and they steal my fish ALL THE FUCKING TIME.
