People in the UK now fit into seven social classes, a major survey conducted by the BBC suggests.
It says the traditional categories of working, middle and upper class are outdated, fitting 39% of people.
It found a new model of seven social classes ranging from the elite at the top to a "precariat" - the poor, precarious proletariat - at the bottom.
More than 161,000 people took part in the Great British Class Survey, the largest study of class in the UK.[/quote]

completely killing any serious discussion that this article could have provoked
ITT: Everyone are emergent service workers
Apparently knowing farm workers and cleaners is less socially impressive than call centre workers. Quite why hearing the latest double glazing offer is preferable to not starving or wallowing in your shit is beyond me. Elitist pile of shite.
And solicitors have a higher social status than scientists. Pffhaha!
Precariat ho ho ho

wow calm down it's about the quality and pay of the work not how useful it is
I took the test, though being an American :v:
"Precariat
This is the poorest and most deprived class group."
Emergent service worker
I don't know anybody with any of those jobs what a ridiculous metric
emergent service worker
my cultural capital is off the scale g

It also tries to define one's place in society. The first middle wedge represents "the average social status of the people you socialise with". Going through the options, it looks like any "professional" job ranks highly, whereas anything requiring physical labour ranks poorly.
Technical Middle Class.
I fucking knew there was a reason I had a beard.
Also I am ecstatic that there is now a calculated way for everyone to check their privilege.

which is an accurate reflection of the status quo
it makes no judgement as to if that's right or wrong (protip: it's wrong)
It's amusing, I guess the UK judges working class based on music taste :v:

Then I don't like the status quo, and I'll leave it at that.
Hohohohoho, now I can laugh at those peasants from my seal skin throne made of 24-karat gold I extorted from my immigrant employees!
What a load of bullshit, the selections on Cultural and Social are like hipster heaven.

or maybe sitting indoors playing video games isnt very cultural
I'm a precariat if I count my personal stuff, but middle class if I count in my parents income/land.
Visiting museums and listening to classical music makes me refined somehow.
Oh wait, I'm traditional working class, I missed out the cultural tab somehow.
My dad thinks this is a conpiracy for the government to seem like they have decreased deprivation
Elite...
*hides*

The selections are very small and focus completely at the classical, indie and typical elitist stuff related to hipster stereotype.
It's biased to fuck.

Except it's not, the questions relating to music relate to the fact that those genres will typically have establishments dedicated to them i.e Jazz lounges and Orchestras, which are typically associated with high society.
where's the 'chav' class
Apparently knowing people of a certain profession and having certain hobbies would put me into elite once I start working, even though I used slightly below-average salary for people having finished my education (since I'm still studying at the moment).
See you guys, liking/listening to classical music makes the social elite, gonna go eat lobster and drink expensive cognac.
