Several people were arrested. Several explosions and detonations were heard in Verviers in the neighborhood of the station, according to testimony collected by RTBF. There are giving different testimonies. So says a witness to RTL that they heard gunfire from automatic rifles for ten minutes. On Twitter, one speaks of 3 to 4 large explosions. Now more. EDIT: thanks to whoever changed the title, it's a bit more accurate. Most info is given on tv right now. EDIT2: according to reports on tv, there's 2 dead and one wounded and arrested. They supposedly also found AK's in the house during the raid. There will be a press conference in half an hour.
They're doing a country-wide operation apparently to people who returned from Syria or are connected to ISIS, looks like they found some dangerous people.

Pure conjecture from my part, but possibly he also tipped them of other would-be customers.

No matter what business they are into.
looks like they killed 3 young guys who were planning a terrorist attack soon jesus christ
One link that i see is very present between alot of these cases is that the men are typically always under 30, most first generation born to that country.
I didn't even believe we had a proper anti-terror unit, since you never hear about them. Guess we do, heh :v:
Goes to show that people are still human. No matter what business they are into.
What I said appears to have been slightly inaccurate. The news report said he denies being an arms dealer, but is simply someone who bought and sold cars in sketchy circles and Coulibaly (the gunman at the Kosher store) had threatened him at some point. Apparently the police knew him locally (he seemed to be a notorious gambler in Mons). Still, he's been arrested for now.
I didn't even believe we had a proper anti-terror unit, since you never hear about them. Bomb Scare in the Gendarmerie's HQ in Brussels, the premises are being evacuated right now.
Bomb Scare in the Gendarmerie's HQ in Brussels, the premises are being evacuated right now.
We no longer have a Gendarmerie though? Unless you mean the old Gendarmerie barracks that got reused for police.
We no longer have a Gendarmerie though? According to the press conference tonight (which was rather short), they raised the terror threat level from 2 to 3 (out of a scale of 4) and the police activities are specifically targeting persons returning from Syria. There was a ten-minute firefight between them and police during the raid, but none of the police got hurt. Apparently they were armed with military-grade weapons. Honestly, I hope they step up their game and go after the clerics responsible for convincing people to goto Syria. Not only is it indirect recruitment, but they might also be involved in aiding the arms trafficking in and out of the middle east and Ukraine. [editline]15th January 2015[/editline] UPDATE: Second raid has been reported, and it's also suspected that other raids are going to be commenced in the same area.
Belgium is getting shit done, i like that.
More countries need to be doing these things.
They probably are, a lot of them just won't escalate to this point or won't be covered by the media
The more it's covered by the media, the greater risk for escalation. Likewise if the media finds out while a few raids have been already conducted, it can lead to public backlash for "discrimination" It's a no-win situation unless you have concrete proof that they were terrorist cells. Also video: Supposedly, further raids are being conducted.
Well, I guess since they were armed and fighting back, they were at least prepared for some sort of operation.
The Belgian authorities try, but it seems to be hard to pin down those people, at least from a legal point of view. For all the youths they've brainwashed into killing others and themselves, all they get is a half-hearted slap on the wrist. The most notorious example is arguably Fouad Belkacem, the spokesman of Sharia4Belgium.
People are protesting this... unbelievable
People are protesting this... unbelievable
What? Where? That sounds really stupid.
Apparently they planned on kidnapping and decapitating a high-ranking government official. I'm glad they got stopped as soon as they were.
Goes to show that people are still human. No matter what business they are into.
What I've read is that the dealer scammed Coulibaly, and he went to the police after the shootings happened because he realised he might have pissed off some dangerous people.
If you come back from Syria it should be on a coffin. EDIT: I mean those who are indoctrinated that is.
I can't believe we let people that go to syria to join in on the fucking war that's going on there even return to belgium, why should we allow them back in if they're going to syria to fight for the terrorists?
