Terry Myerson just announced on stage that, for the first year after Windows 10 launches, any device running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1 will be able to upgrade to the latest version of MIcrosoft's OS — for free. How exactly this program will work isn't clear just yet — it'll certainly be subject to some hardware requirements, particularly for older machines running Windows 7. But a simplified upgrade path will likely do a lot to help Windows 10 adoption — rather than dealing with a number of different versions of Windows and different upgrade costs, most consumers will simply take this free update and enjoy running Microsoft's latest.
A better result than I could have possibly imagined. Microsoft is going for the jugular here with market adoption.
It's a great deal but you should've added into the title that it's only available for the first year. If you miss that window you have to pay for it.
Shieet. Can't beat free.
Yay, now I can yell at my PC and tell it to look up shit like I do on my phone and tablet.
It's a great deal but you should've added into the title that it's only available for the first year. If you miss that window you have to pay for it.
Still, that's a massive window to get a huge amount of people on the new OS.
A year is still a hell of a long window, though. I don't think anybody would miss that.
I'd rather wait a year when jumping from 7->10 so they have time to get the launch bugs out
I'd rather wait a year when jumping from 7->10 so they have time to get the launch bugs out
or you can grab it, install it as a 2nd OS, then wait.
Is it still gonna be subscription based though? That'd be kinda shitty to have it be free for a year and then make you pay for it month to month like they had proposed.
Where did you hear it was going to be subscription-based?
or you can grab it, install it as a 2nd OS, then wait.
I'd rather just run it in a VM
I foresee a lot of people being upset that they bought Windows 8 for the purposes of upgrading to 10..
I'd rather wait a year when jumping from 7->10 so they have time to get the launch bugs out
They've had Win10 on tech preview release for a while now. They're already doing the bug fixing and updates, with a new patch / release coming within today / the next few days. It was already stable as fuck when I tested it (Before an explorer.exe crash forced me to return to 7, they fixed that after a few days). I suggest people take it when it comes out.
Where did you hear it was going to be subscription-based?
There was a thread about it in SH a while back, lemme do some digging. I'm at work, no promise of success, I just remember reading about it being proposed/talked about, made me wonder wtf.

Staying bleeding edge is fine but not if it may impact your work

I could be wrong, my facility's firewall blocks out most news sites. (But weirdly not Facepunch.)
Is it still gonna be subscription based though? That'd be kinda shitty to have it be free for a year and then make you pay for it month to month like they had proposed.
The model they were proposing was something like their office subscription model (which is what I have), where instead of pay a huge lump sump for a product you pay a tiny fee each month and automatically get the new version. The way it works for office, at least, is that to get an exactly equivalent product the subscription is way cheaper in the long run if you consider the rate at which new ones come out. They weren't proposing that even if you get a free fully licensed copy of the OS you have to pay monthly anyway :v:
As someone who didn't watch the stream, why should I upgrade from 7 to 10 anyways?
As someone who didn't watch the stream, why should I upgrade from 7 to 10 anyways?
Yeah really
As someone who didn't watch the stream, why should I upgrade from 7 to 10 anyways?
You can yell at Cortana to do shit.
As someone who didn't watch the stream, why should I upgrade from 7 to 10 anyways?
because you want to
As someone who didn't watch the stream, why should I upgrade from 7 to 10 anyways?
DX11.1+ support, corner window snapping (4 windows per screen is amazing to me instead of 2 screens snapped to the sides in 7), and the OS feels more responsive compared to 7 (Most likely optimizations in file system / OS task management).
Did they move on from 8 or does it still look like it belongs on a touchscreen tablet I hope the "lets make everything solid flat colored and completely squared" shitty fad is over too
I've gotten a tad bored of Windows 7 so I'll probably switch. Pretty neat that it'll be free.
Did they move on from 8 or does it still look like it belongs on a touchscreen tablet I hope the "lets make everything solid flat colored and completely squared" shitty fad is over too
It's Touchscreen optimized, with desktops more in focus(as appose to 8)
What happens when you want to do a fresh install after the year is over? You'd have to go and buy a license.
I'm sold!
I hope the "lets make everything solid flat colored and completely squared" shitty fad is over too
That was still the thing last I checked into the tech preview. I dunno, I enjoyed it compared to rounded edges on 7. Like Steam's current windows.
What happens when you want to do a fresh install after the year is over? You'd have to go and buy a license.
It's Free AFTER a year of it's release. AKA, if you have a valid install of Windows 7 you can upgrade after 365 days of Windows 10's release.
