[quote]B.C.'s 41,000 teachers will strike on Monday, after voting overwhelmingly in favour of ramping up their job action, leaving many parents scrambling to make child-care plans.
The B.C. Teachers Federation's announced on Wednesday night that 87 per cent of the 32,000 teachers who voted, voted yes to a strike.
The BCTF has scheduled a news conference for 8 a.m. PT Thursday to release more details about the teachers' plans.
Many school boards have already said they plan to keep schools open during a strike but are asking parents to make other plans for their children if possible.
Earlier this week, the Labour Relations Board ruled the teachers can stage a three-day strike once, and then strike one day a week after that.
But hours after that ruling was issued, the province introduced legislation that would make any strike illegal until Aug. 31.
It is expected the legislation will take at least one or even two weeks to pass into law. That means teachers will likely be in a legal position to strike three days next week and maybe one day the week after.
B.C. teachers have been without a contract since June and have been staging job actions since the start of the school year in September.
Meanwhile, B.C. students are planning their own walkout Friday to call attention to the effects the dispute is having on their education.[/quote]

First thread on this forum for me, is there a better tag to use than quote tags?
Also, I'm supporting the strike, not for "I can not go to school for a few days", but in support for the fact that the provincial government is shameful in making democracy work to the government's advantage when unions decide to strike.
See this thread for more details on the provincial government thing:

Huh, bigger than i was led on to think
School unions are terrible. My friend told me that if his mom still wanted to teach during the strike, she might have to pay a fine, and can't go back to work until that fine is paid.
What the fuck?

That's because the union is attempting to stand up for the rights of teachers (her included) and she'd be undermining that by working. It can definitely put some people in a bad position but the ultimate goal is probably going to ultimately be to her enrichment unless it's one of those chance shitty unions.
There is also gonna be an early student walk out on Friday apparently.
The teachers should honestly quit their bitching. A teacher with appropriate certification makes some $70,000 for working only 9 months of the year. I honestly cannot see why they feel the need to ask for more.
Do your research because BC teachers don't make anywhere close to that.

Yes, they do.

someone with a sence reason on the news so many fucking people are for this on the news is the news just airing the the people (parents) for it .?
Wait, they can pass legislation saying you can't strike?
Isn't that like... Tyrannical?

the government is increasing the maximum mentally disabled kids allowed per normal class, and increasing the class student limit.

I understand that part of it but why they also feel inclined to just add in a 15% bonus in their demands for their troubles bewilders me.

Because BC teachers

That's not democracy and that's not worker's rights at all.
A union doesn't have the right to take away the rights of the workers, just like the government doesn't. If a union wants to penalize people who don't want to strike, the union should be disbanded and prosecuted for coercion and violation of worker's rights.
Don't forget $9000 in benefits they get every year that comes out of my pocket. Guess what, while I'm at it the education minister pointed out on his twitter that he is getting a %10 paycut to balance BC's budget while teachers are left alone yet they call him a hypocrite and a destroyer of democracy. For the record I've asked around and teachers make about 90K end year.

they can also reduce their pay for a percentage and after 3 or 4 years of that take an entire year off with no work with the same pay as those past years, at least thats what I've heard
They actually have little say in their jobs. They have union negotiation rights. But the government doesn't want to give them anything above net zero. Now they are going to be barred from being able to strike, charging each teacher 475 dollars a day, each union member a few thousand and the union itself 1.3 million.

The teachers voted to strike. It's pretty democratic if you ask me
They complain far too much.

If they aren't allowed to refuse to strike it still should be criminal.
